Do Biodegradable Golf Balls REALLY Work? ?????♂?
The Back Nine Golf
A one-of-a-kind indoor golf simulator experience. Now offering franchise opportunities near you!
Golfers love the game, but what happens when sustainability meets performance? We put biodegradable golf balls to the test—comparing them to traditional golf balls in our simulator and testing their durability in real water conditions over 90 days.
The Challenge: Performance vs. Sustainability ?
To see if these balls could hold up, we tested them in three different targets (42 yards, 94 yards, and 175 yards) against Callaway Super Soft balls. Initial impressions?
? Strange feel – These balls were heavier, with a texture similar to a bar of soap.
? Impact concerns – Hitting them felt like striking a pool ball—damaging clubs and leaving residue. ??
? Performance – Carry distances were inconsistent compared to a standard golf ball.
The 90-Day Breakdown Test ??
We submerged them in saltwater, pond water, and freshwater to test their biodegradability. The results?
? Pond water & freshwater – The balls softened and partially dissolved over time.
? Saltwater – Surprisingly, no major change after 90 days.
? Durability concerns – The outer layers broke down unevenly, leaving behind some solid material.
The Verdict ??
While these balls might degrade in the right conditions, they don’t play like real golf balls, and they’re tough on clubs. Unless you’re hitting into the ocean from a yacht, they might not be worth it.
What do you think—would you try biodegradable golf balls, or stick to traditional ones? Let us know in the comments!
