DMGroup Spotlight on Secondary Scheduling
Creating secondary schedules is so complex that schools often default to treating schedule creation as a technical task and rely on outdated practices, limiting their ability to support evolving student needs and priorities. Are your schedules making the most effective use of student, teacher, and staff time and maximizing opportunities for students?
At the Superintendents' Strategy Summit, district leaders from Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Illinois discussed how they utilized DMGroup’s strategic scheduling approach to address changing student needs and maximize staff efficiency. In this newsletter, we share the success story of Medford Public Schools in Medford, Massachusetts.
Medford Public Schools Align Systems and Structures for Optimal Instruction within a Comprehensive High School
The Challenge:?For years, Medford Public Schools (MPS) operated two distinct high schools: one comprehensive and one vocational-technical. The district then merged the schools to streamline secondary school operations while continuing to provide students with enriching opportunities. Despite the merger, the schools maintained independent schedules, which prevented flexible and thoughtful staffing and resulted in unequal educational opportunities for students. The schedule structures also created barriers to success that impacted all stakeholders.?
The Solution: The district engaged DMGroup to conduct a Secondary Scheduling Opportunity Review. Throughout the review, DMGroup connected with nearly 60 MPS stakeholders from both branches of the high school.
Based on an in-depth review of the district’s objectives and resources, DMGroup’s consulting team presented several options.
MPS opted for a 7-period schedule model that allowed the school to integrate vocational school and high school schedules, add more electives for students, and provide built-in time for students to catch up on work, learn new skills, and stay on task.
Following this work, the Medford High School team joined DMGroup's Secondary Scheduling Institute to build capacity in their district to continue to leverage schedules to maximize opportunities for students.?
