CASE STUDY: Lightning a Path to Improvement at West Feliciana Parish Schools (LA)

Despite the many challenges to learning caused by the pandemic,?West Feliciana Parish Schools ?(West Feliciana) was pleased to find that overall student achievement remained strong. However, the standardized testing data revealed that the gap between students with and without disabilities was far wider than that of the state - 35 percentage points in West Feliciana compared to 22 percentage points at the state level.?

Determined to take action, the district partnered with DMGroup to conduct a?Special Education Opportunity Review ?to identify ways to better support its students with disabilities.

Some key DMGroup's recommendations included the following:?

• Establish a clearly articulated shared vision across the district:?high levels of principal autonomy in the district allowed each school leader to decide independently on how to implement special education programming, which could look very different across the district's schools.?
• Increase collaboration between departments for general education and special education or student support at both the district and school levels?to?ensure that knowledge and priorities are shared and that special education students receive the same curriculum and programming as their general education peers.

• Appoint a building-level special education coordinator?to enable streamlined communication from the central office to schools and ensure that both general and special education teachers receive the critical information and development they need.
