Breakthrough Results (BTR) Overview

Breakthrough Results (BTR) approach effectively achieves measurable results on a vital performance objective while building participants’ leadership skills.?

Through the BTR approach, district and school-based teams work with a dedicated DMGroup performance coach to accomplish a highly specific SMART goal within a short period - usually 10 weeks.

Breakthrough Results combines focused goals, progress monitoring, performance coaching, and targeted professional development to motivate teams to innovate, iterate, and, if necessary, pivot in rapid cycles to achieve measurable results.

As a result of DMGroup's Breakthrough Results, more than 4,600 staff members and 18,000 students in over 1,350 teams across the country have achieved their performance objectives.

SUCCESS STORY: Achieving Dramatic Improvements in Literacy at LAUSD

In spring 2021, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) achieved remarkable results in first-grade literacy using the Breakthrough Results approach. Efforts were focused on first-graders from some of the most high-need populations; these students included English learners, students experiencing homelessness or part of the foster care system, and other historically underserved students. Most were reading well below grade level or were even categorized as non-readers.


By the end of just 10 weeks, this group of students had approximately doubled their average reading ability across foundational skills.

Even after the 10 weeks of Breakthrough Results work, these students continued growing as they had developed a foundational set of reading skills and a love of reading.

A well-structured SMART goal is central to Breakthrough Results. It provides the vehicle through which leadership skills are practiced and learned while driving meaningful results for the district.??

While the SMART goal has become a familiar concept and seems straightforward to create, crafting a SMART goal that truly embodies all the necessary components (Specific, Measurable, Aggressive but Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound) is actually very challenging.?
