While on November 15th a relatively "large" crypto community was expecting a Bitcoin Cash (BCH) network update, which many predicted would lead to a hard fork. This protocol upgrade has divided the BCH community in two camps as there are two dominating proposals for the implementation of the BCH network in the form of Bitcoin ABC and Bitcoin SV (Satoshi’s Vision). (Not relevant to get to the specifics of the situation. This initial paragraph is somehow aimed to DLT & Blockchain developers out there that might want to put their skills and hours aimed to build a better world by developing solutions and applications that could potentially improve our quality of life).
At the same time...
During these same dates, (Nov 13th to 15th) Mayors and government officials of many cities around the world, smart city′s associations; large, medium and small companies from all around the world showed up in Barcelona to meet and discuss the problems, challenges and potential solutions for cities and citizens globally.
What I learned:
- Many of these cities lack of a clear roadmap for implementing digital transformation across their entire operation.
- Important to highlight that cities generate around 82% of Total GDP (Gross Domestic Product)
- By 2045, the number of people living in cities will increase by 1.5 times to 6 billion, adding 2 billion more urban residents. By 2050, 68% of the world’s population will be urban. 7 out of 10 people will live in cities.
- Cities consume close to 2/3 of the world’s energy and account for more than 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time cities face aging infrastructure, diminishing environmental resources, rising economic inequality under tight municipal budgets.
- Almost half a billion urban residents live in coastal areas, increasing their vulnerability to storm surges and sea level rise.
- The solutions offered by private companies to cities often aim to address specific problems, but they don′t integrate across the whole urban ecosystem.
The advantages and opportunities of integrating DLT & Blockchain technology to current smart cities′platforms are overwhelming. If we put people first at the center of the design of our solutions, much better products will emerge.
There is no doubt that DLT & Blockchain will transform the financial sector, but wait and see what will do with many others: IMPROVE THEM.
