?Global remittances in 2022 hit a record $647 billion, tripling official development assistance. Informal channels make this figure even higher. Egypt's remittances surpass Suez Canal revenues, Sri Lanka's exceed tea exports, and Morocco's top tourism earnings. India is the largest recipient, with over $100 billion, followed by Mexico, China, and the Philippines.
Foreign currency debit card use suspended in Egypt
The Central Bank of Egypt has instructed banks to indefinitely suspend the use of debit and prepaid cards abroad for foreign currency withdrawals or payments in the country. In recent months, banks have also tightened restrictions on the amount of foreign currency customers can purchase outside Egypt using their local cards and the amount they can charge to their credit cards abroad.
