Real-time payments in Asia

Real-time local payments have become the go-to payment method in Asia, largely due to a high unbanked population and a complex and diverse regulatory landscape. For example, in India, where 224 million people remain unbanked, real-time online payments account for a huge 81% of all payments.?

With Asia expected to exceed 50% of the world GDP by 2040, the use of real-time local payment methods like UPI shows no sign of slowing down. Merchants are increasingly choosing to offer these local payment methods in order to offer their goods and services in these regions, without the need to set up a local entity in each country.

Adoption has been rapid, with over 19 million Troy cards in circulation by the end of 2023, and with an 100% acceptance rate among Turkish merchants, this number is only expected to grow.?
