DL E&C’s various efforts to combat climate change

DL E&C has built an eco-friendly construction process to effectively respond to the international community’s call for climate change, and to minimize possible environmental impacts throughout the entire construction process from building design to waste treatment. DL E&C is also actively developing and applying diverse eco-friendly construction technologies to shift to a low-carbon business portfolio. In fact, in 2021 alone, DL E&C reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 18.1% year-on-year, recycled 99.8% of construction waste, and 42.2% of construction water.

Expansion of Eco-friendly Business

DL E&C is striving to grow into a company that provides comprehensive solutions throughout carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), which is evaluated as the core of carbon neutrality. Furthermore, in August, DL E&C incorporated Carbonco, a specialized company to expand its eco-friendly de-carbonization business. Carbonco is a total solution company that proposes optimal carbon reduction solutions for various industries. In May this year, DL E&C is taking a step closer to becoming an eco-friendly company, such as winning an order for FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) of biodegradable plastics, PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) plant to be built in Illinoi, USA with an annual capacity of 75,000 tons.

PLA is a biodegradable plastic made with lactic acid (LA) that is produced by fermenting and refining glucose extracted from corn. Made from safe, plant-based biomaterials, PLA is mainly used for food packaging containers, straws, tableware, water bottles, and tea bags as it can naturally decompose in several months by microorganisms under certain conditions.

Application of eco-friendly design technology

DL E&C uses BIM-based system at the stage of architectural design to check the environmental impact of the building and the application of eco-friendly materials. DL E&C applies 3-D modeling technology to analyze construction projects objectively, and make plans for reducing the use of city gas, water and building waste materials, and decreasing consumption of energy caused by work errors and carbon emissions from actual construction. DL E&C is also optimizing work flow based on BIM, and minimizing the use of unnecessary equipment or the distance of vehicle transportation to improve environmental performance.

Advanced Waste Management

DL E&C has established a monitoring system to minimize waste discharge generated from construction sites, and operates system and conducts training to discharge waste pursuant to legal procedures, which induces activities for separating and sending out waste, increases the recycling rate pursuant to relevant laws to protect nearby residents and environment. In particular, we aim for zero incineration and landfill waste from the design stage of all projects in order to increase the waste recycling rate, and reflect management plans at the time of setting up construction plans for all subcontractors in the construction stage, taking into account DL E&C’s target for waste recycling rate.

?“Carbon Reduction Campaign” fulfilled in daily life

DL E&C is carrying out a variety of activities, including Carbon Zero Challenge and 1-1-1 Action Campaign, in order to enhance employees’ eco-friendly consciousness and to put ESG management activities into practice. “Carbon Zero Challenge: Zero Paper Cup Campaign” is a campaign to reduce the use of disposable and unrecyclable paper cups. Restriction on the purchase of in-house paper cups and the supply of personal tumblers encouraged employees to participate in eco-friendly activities, which saved 620,000 disposable paper cups used in the head office every year and reduced about 4.25tons of carbon emissions. 1-1-1 Action Campaign (1 person reduces 1 ton of greenhouse gas for 1 year) to reduce carbon in our daily life in partnership with Jongno-gu Office has been participated by 190 DL E&C employees and has reduced about 31 tons of carbon so far.
