DIY... Are You Heading To Probate?

DIY... Are You Heading To Probate?

All over the internet there are websites that offer DIY estate planning documents. At first glance, their offers appear affordable and convenient. For example, some websites offer a so-called “simple will” for less than $50.00 that you can print out yourself just a few minutes after filling out an online form. Even if it’s not the best plan available for you, it may seem like this option is the quickest way to protect your family, your assets and have some peace of mind that your estate is in order.

However, the one-size-fits-all estate planning documents available online may in fact expose your family and assets to greater risk. A major problem with such DIY forms is you are not informed what will happen to your estate in case of your incapacity. The DIY form may give you a false sense of security, without knowing how the laws in your state will affect your estate or true consequences of the document you prepare yourself.?What seemed like a good deal at the time may cause more financial and emotional hardship for your loved ones than if you had done nothing at all.

Contrary to popular belief, estate planning involves more than just filling out some forms. Sadly, most people don’t learn that until they must handle the estate of loved one who has passed away and navigate all problems that arise from DIY estate planning. The very ones they were trying to protect are the ones left picking up the pieces.

One of the main goals in estate planning is to keep your family out of court. Unfortunately, countless families have discovered that DIY estate planning not only often fails to keep the family out of court but can also complicate the estate and increase the costs to settle the estate.
