DIY Network Setup: Beginners Edition


Getting Started: ??

Physical Connections:

  1. Connected the router to the wall outlet using an RJ45 Ethernet cable.
  2. Plugged the cable into the WAN port of the router.
  3. Connected computers and other wired devices to the router using RJ45 cables.


Configure Computer Settings:

  1. Opened Network Settings on the computer.
  2. Set IP assignment and DNS server assignment to automatic.


Wireless Access Point Configuration:

  1. Connected a wireless access point (WAP) to the router using an Ethernet cable.
  2. Powered on the WAP and accessed its settings:
  3. Typed its default IP address into a browser.
  4. Changed the SSID (Wi-Fi network name) for easy identification.
  5. Set a strong WPA3 passphrase to ensure secure access.


Connect Additional Devices:

  1. Connected wireless devices to the newly configured Wi-Fi network:
  2. Used the updated SSID and passphrase.
  3. Verified that all devices were securely connected and accessible.


Testing the Network: ??

Ping Command:

  1. Used the ping command in the terminal to test connectivity between the computer and the router or other devices on the network.
  2. View Network Details:
  3. Ran ipconfig to check:
  4. IP Address
  5. Subnet Mask
  6. Default Gateway
  7. Verified that the device was assigned an appropriate IP address.
