The DIY Health Trap: Why Solving Problems the Right Way Saves You Time, Energy, and Stress

The DIY Shelf Saga: A Lesson in Health and Performance

Recently, I was helping my dad reorganize a bedroom.

He needed more space, and the solution was simple:

Shelves.

My dad, a retired builder and joiner is forever the DIY enthusiast.

He rummaged through the shed for scraps of wood.

That magical shed that always seems to have a spare part for something??

He measured, planned, and listed everything he’d need: brackets, nails, tools, and paint.

I watched the smoke coming out of his ears for a moment, then said:

"What if we order a ready-made set of shelves?

It’s not expensive, arrives in two days, and takes 30 minutes to assemble."

Despite my suggestion, he insisted his way was better.

But then I had to remind him about his health issues—my dad was recovering from broken ribs and a shoulder injury after recently falling from a set of ladders that collapsed.

Plus he has COPD.

Building shelves from scratch would take him hours, cause pain, and add unnecessary stress.

Especially for my mother who would have to listen to all the moaning about this and that!

So I had to be stern with him and remind him that it was easier to pay for the shelves and this would prove much more valuable to him instead of the drama attached to doing it himself.

I placed the order. The shelves arrived, I put them up, and the room was transformed.
