Diwali: A Celebration of Lights, Unity, and Inclusivity

Diwali: A Celebration of Lights, Unity, and Inclusivity

In a quiet neighbourhood, nestled in the heart of Bangalore city in southern India, Diwali (also known as Deepavali) is a festival that holds a special place in my heart. I celebrate Diwali not just because it’s a festival of lights and joy but because it truly represents a connection to my heritage and a bridge to unity in our diverse world. And my celebrations at home extend to my profession. I’m fortunate to have found a workplace to share and embrace this celebration in my role at CSC .

?Growing up in a family that embraced traditions, Diwali has always been more than just a festival for me as it connects me with my roots. Celebrating is like connecting with generations of family who have observed this festival before me.

We all eagerly await the festival, cleaning our homes meticulously, symbolizing the removal of negativity from our lives. We then decorate it with colourful rangoli designs (using coloured powder or rice flour, flowers), earthen Diyas, and strings of fairy lights. The atmosphere is filled with the scent of incense and the soft warm golden glow of oil lamps.

And my favourite part of the observance is when my family gathers for prayers. It's a time for reflection and gratitude, not just for material wealth but for the abundance of love, happiness, and unity in our lives. Diwali is more than just a festival for me - it's a reminder that no matter our differences, we can come together in the spirit of love, light, the triumph of good over evil and unity.

I am happy with the fact that Diwali has transcended beyond religious and cultural boundaries and is celebrated by people from various backgrounds and beliefs. Beyond the traditional customs, it represents a time of self-reflection, renewal, and the opportunity to set positive intentions for the future.

At CSC, I've been fortunate to work in a place that values the diverse backgrounds and traditions of our colleagues. Diwali is not just celebrated by individuals like me, it is embraced and celebrated by the organization. Every year, a Diya lighting is hosted in our headquarters and broadcast to our other offices. There’s a food day with a feast of traditional sweets and savoury delights for everyone to indulge in. Articles from my colleagues reflecting on their personal connections to Diwali are also shared across the company.

It's a time when diversity is not merely acknowledged but celebrated. I feel the power of cultural observances, an inclusive environment, respect for one another, and a sense of unity and inclusivity. It's a reminder that, just like the Diyas that light up our offices, our unique backgrounds and beliefs illuminate the path to unity and harmony.

As the Diyas flicker and the sweets are shared, I am thrilled that the spirit of Diwali has indeed found a welcoming home at CSC.

This is my personal story of Diwali, one that intertwines personal traditions with an organization that understands the importance of cultural celebrations. It's a story of unity, inclusivity, and the power of coming together to celebrate our diverse world.
