This week, all around the world, billions of people celebrated Diwali, the Festival of Lights. Rooted in ancient Indian mythology, Diwali is more than just a celebration of lights and festivity; it holds profound lessons for leadership and transformation. The legendary story of Samundra Manthan (the Churning of the divine Ocean) from Hindu mythology, central to Diwali’s origins associated with goddess of wealth amp; prosperity- Laxmi , mirrors the journey organizations undertake in Agile transformations. In this tale, the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) come together to churn the divine ocean, hoping to obtain Amrit—the nectar of immortality. This grand endeavor was filled with teamwork, challenges, and sacrifices, providing valuable insights into Agile leadership and the journey to transformation.
Samundra Manthan: A Cosmic Quest for Transformation - Aligning Diverse Forces
The myth of Samundra Manthan begins with two rival factions, the Devas and Asuras, despite their opposing goals and values , worked together setting aside their differences to collaborate on churning the divine ocean. This tale of unity underscores a key Agile principle: collaboration.nbsp;For Agile transformations to succeed, cross-functional teams must come together with shared objectives, overcoming any silos or departmental conflicts that hinder progress. Just as the Devas and Asuras pooled their strengths for a common goal, Agile teams flourish when everyone aligns on a collective mission and works collaboratively.
Diwali : Celebrating the continuous progress along the Journey
The Quest ultimate goal was to get the nectar of immortality (Amrit), but along the way Devas and Asuras were rewarded with multiple divine treasures, culminating in the appearance of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These moments represent the fruition of collective continuous effort and collaboration. Diwali celebrates the arrival of these blessings, embodying the spirit of hope, renewal, and light.
In the context of Agile, though the ultimate goal is to attain Organizational agility, but these treasures symbolize positive outcomes that teams experience as they progress in their Agile journey—higher productivity, faster feedback loops, and greater customer satisfactions. Culminating in more revenue and profitability for the organization. For Agile leaders, Diwali is a reminder to celebrate intermediate wins and acknowledge the progress teams make along their transformation journey. Recognizing these achievements not only boosts team morale but also reinforces the value of Agile practices and motivates teams to continue striving for greater heights and ultimate goals.
Embracing the Challenges: The Poison of Uncomfortable Truths - Retrospectives
The story of Samundra Manthan also highlights multiple enduring hardships (logistics, tools ) amp; risks (Poisons) and how divine leadership of Lord Vishnu amp; Lord Shiva supported and guided the entire endeavor towards its success. The toxic poison—Halahal, that emerged during the churning process threatening the entire cosmos, represents the tough truths and challenges Agile teams often face during retrospectives or maturity assessments.
Retrospectives, like the Samundra Manthan, can reveal uncomfortable realities—inefficiencies, communication gaps, or areas of friction within teams. Addressing these issues head-on, rather than ignoring them, is vital for growth.

The Role of Visionary Leadership: Vishnu’s Sustaining Presence
In the tale, Lord Vishnu’s role was that of a visionary leader who ensured the process stayed on course and intervened whenever necessary. Not only Vishnu guided to obtain right tools for the job ((like using Mount Mandara as a churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as a rope), when process started getting out of control, he stabilized Mount Mandara by taking the form of the tortoise Kurma.

Agile leaders act as strategic overseers, guiding teams through the complexities of Agile adoption by providing a clear vision, strategic direction, and consistent support to their teams. Agile leaders must sometimes assume unique roles, adapting their approach to support teams in overcoming obstacles and maintaining steady progress. By providing steadfast support and a clear vision, leaders create an environment where Agile practices can flourish, even in the face of uncertainty.

Just as Shiva’s act of drinking the poison was essential to continue the churning, acknowledging and addressing pain points in retrospectives is crucial for sustainable Agile progress.
