Divya Yellamelli and Operations - A winning duo

Divya Yellamelli has a keen eye for detail in her role as an Operations Manager at Amazon Middle Mile Sort center, Gurgaon. Her fascination with the million moving parts of Supply chain management during her MBA led to her current role at Amazon. Today, Divya keeps her eye on the big-picture frameworks and safety protocols to ensure smooth operations. Let’s get her to fill in the details.

1.?Can you please tell us about yourself?

I’m Divya Yellamelli a B.Tech and MBA graduate from Hyderabad and have been with Amazon for close to 3 years now. I joined as Operations Manager II and was recently promoted to a Sr. Operations Manager role. I’m blessed to have a supportive family who make it easy for me to thrive at my job and grateful to my wonderful parents, in-laws and husband. Outside of work, I’m a food, travel and arts enthusiast.

2.?Could you describe your role at Amazon and what it entails?

As a Sr. Operations Manager, I am responsible for the safety, quality, productivity and operations performance of the middle mile sort center at Gurgaon. My work also impacts Amazon's larger goal of improving customer experience, driving organization goals, team growth and performance.

3.?How has your journey to your current role at Amazon been so far?

My journey so far at Amazon has been one of tremendous learning and growth. I have worked with a young and diverse team led by seasoned and highly qualified leaders. During the inevitable tough times in a job, my team and supervisors showed unconditional support and guidance. I have been a part of multiple high-volume periods and innovations at Amazon and have been recognized for my various contributions. All things considered, I have had a very fulfilling journey, and I am confident that I will continue to do so.

4.?At what point of time in your career did you feel the need to upskill yourself?

I started my career right after B. Tech, in an IT firm as a Software Developer. However, one thing I was sure of was my inclination towards management roles. During my MBA, I found my forte in Operations Management and was determined to establish my career in Supply Chain and Operations industry. From then on, there has been no looking back.

5.?How would you describe your perception of the learning and development opportunities available at Amazon?

Amazon has a vast repository of training that is accessible to everyone for both technical and personality upskilling. I also attend numerous training initiatives which give a sneak peek into other functions - leadership, inclusivity and safety training along with Women’s Leadership Program.

6.??Can you briefly mention a skill or area of expertise you have improved or developed since joining Amazon, owing to Amazon's support or resources?

My role at Amazon requires multiple skills - people management, multi-tasking, stakeholder management, networking, being dynamic and agile, attention to details and deep diving into data to name a few. I cannot name a specific skill because Amazon helped me build multiple skills on many levels.

7.?Do you have a mentor or coach at Amazon, and has it contributed to your growth there?

Yes. I have used Amazon’s Mentorship Platform to choose my mentor during my toughest growth phase. They helped me look at the bigger perspective and the brighter side, helped me identify simple solutions to complex problems, lent an ear when I needed to share, encouraged and made me believe in myself. I have also had the opportunity to connect with various leaders when I needed help figuring out the right path to my short term and long-term goals.

8.?According to you, what is an area of expertise that everyone should develop and improve?

The two most invaluable skills I consider are people management skills and problem-solving skills (technical and general). These two skills complement each other and are mutually inclusive.

9. Can you share an example of a time when you benefited from a learning or training opportunity provided at Amazon?

A big learning milestone was Catapult, a Harvard led 12-week program with weekly live sessions, case studies and learning exercises. It covered the most important skills required to upskill as a leader in a multinational organization. The program has helped me identify my growth areas and I continue to use these very learnings in my day-to-day activities for both personal and career growth.

10.?Share a unique or memorable learning experience at Amazon that has significantly contributed to your professional development.

A satisfying highlight of my time here was successfully delivering a high-volume sale period after an eight-week comprehensive planning and preparation process. It helped me realize my capacity and potential and has given me a strong foundation for my growth at Amazon.

11. What advice would you give to entry-level professionals to become efficient in their career development process?

Thirst for knowledge and passion for your profession are sufficient to get one to the top of the ladder.
