Financial Disclosure... Why Do We Need it to Gather This For Our Separation Process?
Sometimes clients will download a separation template, fill it out and then present this as their agreement to be signed off on, in hope of this being the end product. It's important to know that this will not suffice.
Writing up something between the two of you if you're capable of talking between yourselves before seeking a professional to assist you, can be helpful, but you're nowhere near done.
Then there's those who create a general list of what they have based on their definition of 'stuff,' for example; house, RRSPs, pensions, bank accounts, credit cards etc., but what does this mean in the end? Unless there's documents to support EVERYTHING that exists, then again, this list that you've compiled is barely scratching the surface.
It's so important for each of you to know what you have, know what it means to you under the circumstance of a marriage breakdown, that this isn't the time to try and cut corners to save cost.
Lastly, DO NOT agree to an outcome between yourselves, if/when neither of you are educated about the 'how's' the 'what's and the 'why's,' first. It makes it so much harder in the end, if you've agreed to something that you truly didn't understand.
Cutting corners could cost you dearly in the end, so get help early and move forward one step at a time in an efficient manner.
