Divorce: Sprint Or Marathon?

Divorce: Sprint Or Marathon?

The divorce process can be a lengthy one. There are many components that make the process a marathon. For example, if you have children, an access schedule has to be established and agreed upon. If you have assets, these have to be divided equitably. Perhaps, your marital home has to be sold. The Court process takes time. I advise my clients that the process is more like a marathon than a sprint. As such, I offer these top five suggestions to help them deal with the challenges of what can be a stressful and lengthy situation.

1) Consider joining support groups.

2) Consider hiring a therapist for yourself.

3) Consider hiring a parenting coordinator who can help you and your spouse navigate parenting during the divorce process. The more issues you can resolve directly with your spouse, the easier the process will be. Ask your attorney for recommendations.

4) Don’t use your children as sounding boards as you navigate the process. Let the children be children.

5) Communicate with your attorney. Your attorney needs to have a clear and complete understanding of your needs.
