Divorce and Self-Care

Divorce is an emotional roller coaster, wouldn’t you agree?
Every emotion is raw, unrehearsed, and unrelenting during a divorce.
But what if I could share with you another way? A way in which your emotional well being and healing would be a valid concern with someone during the process.
During the collaborative divorce process, you, your spouse and children’s emotional well being is taken into consideration and dealt with in a healthy way. Each person in your family is given emotional support by a mental health professional who is part of your team. In a collaborative divorce, each spouse has their own attorney, there is a financial neutral, and mental health professionals – and no court! It’s a more respectful, peaceful way to divorce.
One of the first steps to healing is to practice self-care.
Here are some suggestions that we have shared with our clients who struggle with self-care:
- First, show compassion for yourself – this will allow the healing process to begin
- Practice mindfulness
- Being aware of your surroundings can be grounding
- Divorce is a loss – mourn that loss – join a support group
- Become at peace with being alone – it’s a jolting feeling in the beginning, but it will improve
- Know that you are enough; you are worthy
Self-care is often a nonstarter during a traditional divorce process. Most of the time you are barely hanging on and treading water, but with the collaborative process, it can be different.
Our group of diverse experts can help you develop healthy ways for you to diffuse some of the stressors that divorce brings and learn how to practice self-care.
