Diving into the Unknown: Titanic's Influence on Digital Health Entrepreneurship (#9)

Human curiosity is an indomitable force. Throughout history, we have continuously been drawn towards the unknown, the unprecedented, and the unthinkable. This truth is nowhere more evident than in our ongoing fascination with the Titanic. Even more than a century after its tragic sinking, we continue to probe its wreckage, seeking a deeper understanding of its history, and perhaps even a reflection of our own human condition.

Recently, a group of individuals embarked on a high-stakes expedition to explore the sunken vessel through OceanGate's Titan submersible. A fascinating blend of history, science, and adventure tourism, the journey is taking a dramatic turn when the Titan lost contact with its support ship, prompting a frantic, high-stakes search-and-rescue mission.?This event, while tragic, serves as a reminder of the risks we take when we strive to explore the unknown. However, the spirit of discovery and the desire to understand is deeply ingrained in our nature. It is this very spirit that drives us in our pursuit to revolutionize healthcare. It is our audacity to confront the unknown that allows us to innovate, to progress, and to transform the world as we know it.

In this journey, the parallels with the Titanic are ever-present. The legendary ship, now resting at the bottom of the North Atlantic Ocean, remains an enduring symbol of humanity's inherent curiosity and our unwavering determination to explore the unexplored. It reminds us that, regardless of the hurdles we encounter, the voyage continues.

In the digital health industry, for instance, we stand on the precipice of what could be a new era of health and wellbeing, driven by advances in AI, machine learning, big data, and health coaching. We believe that the field of digital health holds untapped potential that can fundamentally transform how we approach wellness and disease management. However, much like the vast, uncharted depths of the ocean, this new frontier is fraught with uncertainty and risk.

As the events surrounding the missing Titan submersible illustrate, even the most meticulously planned expedition can encounter unforeseen obstacles. In the digital health industry, these obstacles often take the form of ethical considerations, data privacy issues, and technological limitations. Yet despite these challenges, we press on, driven by the promise of what lies beneath the surface. We are steadfast in our belief that our exploration will yield valuable insights and powerful tools that can shape the future of healthcare.

?

Indeed, we have seen both extraordinary successes and notable failures within the realm of digital health, echoing the highs and lows experienced by those daring individuals who explored the Titanic's watery grave. In 2018, for example, the health tech startup Theranos was a prime example of a venture that sunk dramatically, collapsing under the weight of its fabricated claims about revolutionizing the blood-testing industry. Like the Titanic, Theranos was deemed 'unsinkable,' and yet, it ended up at the bottom of the ocean due to a lack of transparency and accountability.

?

Conversely, we have inspiring examples of triumphant innovations that have weathered the storm and successfully navigated the icy waters of the industry. Teladoc Health, for example, was one of the first companies to popularize telehealth, enabling remote patient monitoring and consultation. Their success has been meteoric, with a user base that skyrocketed from 1 million in 2015 to 10 million in 2020, providing invaluable services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, Zocdoc has revolutionized the way patients book doctor appointments, making the process easier and more transparent.

?

These examples underscore the risk and reward inherent in the digital health landscape. They remind us that while the seas can be turbulent, and the journey fraught with peril, there is a vast trove of opportunity waiting to be discovered. The lessons we learn from both our successes and failures will light our way, helping us avoid the icebergs and reach our destination: a healthier future for all.

?

The world needs brave explorers, bold thinkers, and audacious innovators. Whether it's the bottom of the ocean or the frontier of digital health, let's dive in together. Let's make a difference. Let's transform lives.

I hope they are found for their loved one's closure. A chance of rescue is slim to none as they need time to decompress etc. And I think I heard on the news that the company doesn't have the equipment for an immediate recovery.
