Diving into the Data Ocean: Why AI-Driven Decision Intelligence is Making Waves

Hello everyone!

First off, I owe you all a bit of catch-up on my LinkedIn newsletter—blame it on the whirlwind that was prep time for #ITCVegas! But now that we're all settling back in, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on one of the themes that brought us together to InsureTech Connect this year.

Next weekend, I'll dive into some insights on #climateresilience, which we hosted on the first day of the summit day of the conference and share highlights from my time in #Zurich last month.

But for now, let's plunge into this week's curated insights.

Pay Attention, People: AI-Driven Decision Intelligence is Here to Stay

"Pay attention" produced with

Ever wonder how some businesses seem to make lightning-fast, spot-on decisions that keep them ahead of the competitive game? ?

In early September, I had the pleasure of diving into SAS Viya with actuarial and data analytics students at Bayes Business School . SAS experts Oana Avramescu and Claudio Senatore shared fascinating insights on the evolving field of AI-driven Decision Intelligence—where SAS stands as a leader in Gartner 's Magic Quadrant.

AI-driven Decision Intelligence is rapidly transforming into a transformative approach that blends artificial intelligence with digital decision-making processes. It's empowering organizations to analyze massive amounts of data and derive actionable insights like never before.

As I recently mused:

By 2030, we're not just stepping into the data age—we're plunging into a digital ocean exceeding 500 zettabytes, where every click, swipe, and interaction adds to a tsunami of information reshaping our world. Fast forward to 2050, and this ocean could swell beyond comprehension. Data won't just be part of life—it'll power life itself, redefining innovation, connectivity, and the very essence of human progress.

Reflecting on my days at 费埃哲公司 and later at Pegasystems a decade ago, my focus was on decision intelligence and next-best actions—first in risk management and then in customer experience. It's incredible to see how this field has evolved and continues to spark my interest.

What's Changed in Decision Intelligence?

  1. From Buzzword to Strategy:?Remember when "decision intelligence" sounded like just another tech buzzword? Thanks to organizations like #Gartner, it's evolved into a concrete business strategy—a measurable process that companies can manage and optimize.
  2. AI and Machine Learning Integration:?We've moved beyond basic data analytics. The deep integration of AI and machine learning now enables better, faster, and more insightful decisions. It's not just data-driven; it's data-augmented, particularly in processes demanding cost efficiencies and resource optimization.
  3. A Multidisciplinary Approach:?Decision intelligence now combines data science, managerial science, and social science. This blend informs strategic, operational, and tactical decisions, allowing organizations to analyze complex datasets and anticipate future trends.
  4. Maturity and Adoption:?With advancements in cloud computing, data management, and AI technologies, decision intelligence is reaching enterprise maturity. Platforms are more integrated and capable, increasing the depth and breadth of decision coverage.

Gartner agrees that organizations are increasingly adopting Decision Intelligence Platforms (DIPs) as decision-making processes become more complex and time-sensitive. Factors like increased competition, regulation, demanding customers and technological disruptions drive this shift.

A Revolution in Decision Intelligence: Why Now?

In our fast-paced, data-saturated world, making informed decisions is more critical than ever for differentiation and gaining a competitive edge. AI-driven Decision Intelligence empowers businesses to:

  • Uncover Hidden Patterns
  • Forecast Trends
  • Transform Data Overload into Strategic Advantage
  • Make Proactive Choices that Drive Success

Embracing AI-driven Decision Intelligence is like unlocking a new level of potential. It paves the way for innovation and efficiency that's hard to beat. So, let's dive into this exciting frontier by looking at practical applications!

  1. Real-Time and Predictive Capabilities:?Today's revolution is characterized by real-time decision-making and enhanced predictive analytics. Organizations can now analyze data as it's generated, providing immediate insights and recommendations that drive operational efficiency and strategic planning.
  2. Out with the Old, In with the New:?By 2030, decision intelligence is expected to replace traditional ERP systems, revolutionizing how organizations process data and make decisions. This shift will enhance every aspect of business operations, from supply chain management to customer interactions.
  3. Causal AI and Explainability:?Enter causal AI—a component focused on causality rather than mere correlation. This approach enhances transparency and understanding, making decision-making more reliable and accountable.
  4. Democratization and Ethics:?Data is becoming more accessible across all organizational levels, challenging traditional gatekeeping in data analysis. Trustworthy and ethical decision-making is increasingly essential, ensuring respect for privacy, transparency, and fairness.
  5. Integration with Emerging Technologies:?Merging decision intelligence with technologies like IoT devices allows organizations to predict challenges, prevent risks, trigger alerts, and promote sustainable practices. This integration enhances scalability and enables handling complex data without compromising performance.

  • Tech Falling Behind:?48% of respondents feel their pricing technology fails to meet evolving demands, impacting their ability to assess and price risks effectively.
  • Time-Consuming Processes:?Building and releasing new pricing models often takes over a month, with some insurers reporting cycles exceeding a year. Talk about slow motion!
  • Administrative Burdens:?Underwriters spend an average of three hours per day on manual data entry, with 90% spending more than two hours re-keying data. That's a lot of coffee breaks!
  • Limited External Data Integration:?Less than 20% of insurers can automatically ingest external data, limiting insights from third-party sources.
  • Decision-Making Impacted:?Only 21% believe their pricing technology allows them to make the best data-driven decisions. Ouch.
  • High Interest in ESG Integration:?95% of insurers already use or plan to use Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) data in their pricing models.
