Diversity not Social Identity by Rachel Collins

On the 1st of December 2021, I became Kingsley Green Recruitment’s very first hire! I had succeeded in the interview process with Managing Director, Christopher Hurst and experienced what I now know, to be his favourite question during an interview; “Tell me 5 adjectives about yourself”. For those of you who have ever been prepared for an interview by Christopher, you will know this question well!
Although moving to legal recruitment was not by design, Christopher ensured that I had equal access to this industry and supported me with the training and the resources I would need to succeed. I felt like I was on a level playing field having been recognised for the wide range of qualities and perspectives that I could bring to the organisation.
New industries can feel like being thrown into the deep end but this shaped me and pushed me to build resources to help me find out things I didn’t know. I don’t mind admitting that I made mistakes but thankfully Christopher’s ethos has always been, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not working hard enough”. This immediately developed an environment where I felt at ease and allowed me to start to feel like I could quite possibly ‘belong’ in this fast-paced playing field.
After a fast growing, exciting six months and two new recruits later, working full time began to prove difficult for me and my young family. In my mind, approaching Christopher about this subject, without feeling like I was letting him down, was going to be difficult. To my delight but not to my surprise and in true Christopher style, he was loyal, supportive and nurturing and like magic, came up with a host of solutions to make life easier. Kingsley Green Recruitment were accepting, supportive and made me feel very much included and required for the future of the business. The transition from full-time working to a more manageable, part-time hybrid environment has continued to be supported.

Five months on, I am looking forward to celebrating my one-year anniversary at Kingsley Green Recruitment. From my experience, if you are genuinely interested in the development of the business and provide positive contributions, your value will always be recognised without any care for your social identity.
A diverse working environment is beneficial for society as well as the business itself.?

2 年Credit to you, Rachel, Christopher Hurst and all at Kingsley Green Recruitment that you could integrate and add value and have an impact within such a short time. I love what you say " From my experience if you are genuinely interested in the development of the business and provide positive contributions, your value will always be recognised without any care for your social identity." My research on identity and self-concept agrees - our social identity doesn't have to be fixed or just given. It can be fluid and it can be gained thanks to attitudes expressed by you and your colleagues. In today's non-linear career path, diversity of prior experiences is a huge asset to us in forging new avenues.

2 年I commented on diversity recently: I think it’s critical to recognise the value that differing perspectives and attitudes bring to a business. I have regularly recruited outside of disciplinary areas and been astounded by what colleagues from other functions have brought to their new roles. Fantastic to see - although wholly unsurprising - that this is firmly embedded within Kingsley Green Recruitment
