Diversity is not a product we can buy or something we can treat as an afterthought. It's an integral part of our individual and societal identity. Now, more than ever, we need leaders and change-makers to actively value and cultivate diversity in the workplace. ????
Diversity encompasses race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, and ability. Each one of us have unique combinations of these elements that enriches our lives and our communities simply by being who we are. True, awareness sessions are essential knowledge builders, but lasting change comes from leaders acknowledging and then addressing the systemic barriers and biases existing in our workspaces through intentional action.
Effective diversity and inclusion work requires a deep commitment to lasting changes in policies, practices, and culture. It means creating space in which hiring and promoting from diverse backgrounds can happen to provide equal opportunities and an equitable workspace that provides ongoing support post hire. Building this balance is part of creating a safe, kind, and inclusive environment for all employees.
While diversity is not a one-off product achieved in an hour long session, that might be where you start(ed). It's getting to the next steps and shifting mindset to understand DEI work is a series of intentional actions that reflect, promote, and protect our diverse human experience by protecting it in the very foundations of the workspace systems we experience. We can start right now to build a world where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and reach their fullest potential.
