Embracing a Childfree Life

The pressure on women to bear children, whether they are inclined to or not, is immense. In this podcast episode, a heterosexual couple in their late 30s recount their experience removing their fertility. The man was able to secure a vasectomy easily without any pushback. The woman, in an attempt to get her tubes tied, was met with horror and forceful?resistance at the suggestion. They speak to an 80-year-old woman that admitted?publicly on television that she didn't intend to have children: she?was fired from her teaching job for it. Yet they also speak to a woman?who?desperately did want to have?children but it wasn't an option open?to her. She?recounts her experience on discovering happiness in a?childfree life - an option?obscured from many of us.

3/4 of LGBTQ+ Women Still Fear Coming Out at Work, Reveals New myGwork Research

Research by myGwork indicates?that overwhelmingly women and non-binary people are still afraid to come out at work. They fear discrimination, a lack of career progression,?training and development opportunities. This is exacerbated for people with intersectional experiences, such as people of colour and trans communities.?

The research also suggests that there is a severe lack of LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary professionals in?C-suite leadership roles. In fact, just 9% hold leadership roles, and 3% are CEOs or Founders.?Why is there such a gulf between queer women and men at work?

Findings suggest that LGBTQIA+ women who do come out at work are much more likely to face?harassment, discrimination or lack of support. 35% of lesbian, bisexual and trans women are not out to their employers, compared with 19% of gay men. And 26% of these women experience bullying or harassment in the workplace, compared to 16% of gay men.

Linda Riley, Founder of Lesbian Visibility Week, said: "while progress has been made, there is still a long way to go before everyone in our community can feel safe to be their authentic selves at work. It is so important to have this kind of study focusing on our specific, and all too often overlooked, experiences.”

Why Female Headliners Are Still Too Big a 'Risk' For Top Festivals Like Glastonbury

Sky News have found that just 18%?of headliners at the UK's top festivals this year are female. Music industry experts say there is still a preconception that festival goers "prefer watching men", and that the female talent pool is too small. However, research from Sky News suggests that women are more popular on?YouTube, Google and the radio, than they are with festival promoters. Shockingly,?Glastonbury, Isle of Wight Festival and Latitude don't have a single female-fronted headliner this year.

"It's about money at the end of the day and we still have old white men gatekeeping the industry,"?says?Eve Horne, part of the?UK Music's Diversity Taskforce.

The latest Vogue issue spotlights 19 disabled people in fashion, sport, and the arts. Ellie Golding, a 21-year-old model, is among them as?as one of five cover stars. You'll recognise Ellie from huge brand campaigns such as Gucci and Asos. She has also been chosen as a UK ambassador for an inclusive?Barbie doll based on a person with Down's syndrome. Ellie is honoured to be a?"role model to others in the industry", and her next goal is to walk the runway at New York Fashion Week.

Voter ID in the UK: What LGBTQ+ People Need to Know Before Heading to the Polls

Local elections take place on May 4th across England. New legislation dictates that voters must present valid ID at the polling station which can present new challenges for many, including LGBTQIA+ citizens.?For?trans and non-binary people, valid photo ID that is an accurate representation of how they look can be difficult to secure.?The photo, name marker or gender marker could all present problems if the ID does not match appearance, or could be used as an excuse to refuse voting rights. Voter turnout is already low for the 18-25-year-old age group, so any further obstacles will only be detrimental to these numbers.

Pope Allows Women to Vote at Bishops’ Meeting for First Time

Pope Francis has approved changes meaning that women will be allowed to vote at the upcoming meeting of bishops. The changes will have five religious sisters added as voting representatives for religious orders, as well as 70 non-bishops, half of whom the Pope has requested to be women.?It is part of a movement to include the voices of women and lay people more in the Catholic church. While the ban on women being ordained is still being upheld, this move forward comes alongside several women being appointed to high-ranking Vatican positions.

This yearly conference brings together experts from all over the world?to support LGBTQIA+ inclusion and celebration in education, offering a mixture of workshops, presentations and panel discussions. This May it will host the founders of LGBTQIA+ History Month in both?the US and the UK, as well as the?heads of UK Charities such as?Stonewall and?Just Like Us. The conference is completely free of charge to equip?all education practitioners?with the tools and resources they need to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment for all learners and staff.?

Twitter Quietly Removes Policy Against Misgendering Trans People

A policy to protect trans users that was enacted in 2018 has been revoked by Twitter. The policy previously made deadnaming (calling a trans person by their previous name) and misgendering a violation of their content moderation guidelines. However, this unannounced change to the policy has been identified by some as "part of a continued trend" of Twitter becoming more hostile to LGBTQIA+ users since Elon Musk's takeover of the platform. Indeed, a?report from GLAAD and Media Matters revealed an increase in anti-LGBTQIA+ speech since the event.

Amazon UK Could Be Forced?To?Recognise First Union

The GMB union believes it is on the brink of a historic victory, saying it has signed up most workers at Amazon’s warehouse in Coventry, with 700 of the 1,300 workers joining. This means their union now needs to be recognised, by law.?The process has not been straightforward, with workers having first protested their pay back in August, and Amanda Gearing, senior organiser of the GMB, has said that the concern now is “Amazon will go out of their way to flood that warehouse with more workers?so the numbers are different." Amazon has ten days?to respond.
