Diversity and Inclusion: A myth or reality?

Diversity and inclusion have always been one of the most debated matters ever that have led to not only controversies but also led to a lot of myths being formed around it. But how much of this information is a myth and how much of this information could be the reality? Myth number 1: Diversity is something that does not exist in the 21st century

While it is true that efforts have been made daily by a lot of people to promote diversity and inclusion in the community, it is not true that diversity and inclusion are no longer a problem in the 21st century. There are still some companies who do not focus on the D&I part of the community which leads them to understand and value people of various backgrounds and ethnicities. However, this can only be done if the managers take the initiative and let the employees know about their ideals and how they want to go ahead with the situation.

Myth number 2: Diversity and inclusion are considered to be the same thing

Both the words have two different meanings and they are also used under two different concepts. However, the usage of diversity and inclusion of these two words together at the same time has created misconceptions amongst people that both of these terms mean the same. Diversity is something that takes place during the hiring period whereas inclusivity is done after the employee has been onboarded and is now a part of the team.

Myth number 3: Diversity is only about the race of a person and does not include other sections.

Diversity does not only include race but it also does include a lot of other factors such as gender, sexuality, the ability of a person, and even the beliefs of the person. Including these into the term, diversity is also quite important when you consider the entire concept.  This issue needs to be tackled right at the hiring phase here the diversity policies have been implemented and that is the only way that diversity and inclusion can be a part of the organization especially when new employees are joining the company.

Myth number 4: Diversity and Inclusion may lead to bad business results

It is quite the opposite when it comes to diversity and inclusion. When diversity and inclusion are being promoted in an organization, better business results are being observed rather than bad results which is one of the misconceptions created by people in the community. It does not increase the overall value of production but also helps improve the overall revenue of the company while also overcoming the hiring bias problems.

Myth number 5: A diverse team included in the organization will lead to trouble in decision-making and will hence make the process quite complicated.

This is one of the most unlikely situations especially when diversity and inclusion promotion is being done in the organization. D&I helps great minds to come together and understand how various perspectives work under various conditions which means there is not just a single solution instead there are multiple solutions that can be utilized to solve the problem. They might also bring about some great innovation in the company while also bringing out the creative side of the employees.

It is true that myths regarding diversity and inclusion surely are a part of the larger HR community and will always be a part of the community. It hence becomes important to break down myths that might create uncertainty among not just the employees but also among the new candidates who are trying to fit into the HR community.
