Diversity and Inclusion Don't Really Matter
...Unless of course you aren't forward thinking. I got you with that title, didn't I? :)
Diversity refers to factors/differences that makes a person unique: Educational background, gender, race, socioeconomic status, competencies, religious beliefs etc. Inclusion on the other-hand is the act of treating them equally and without bias, accepting these individuals and including them in the decision making process where possible.
The reality is that diversity and inclusion are very much important and have always been. However, given the recent social unrest over the past few months, it is a topic that has once again come to the forefront (where it belongs).
Once done right, diversity and inclusion can foster high employee engagement, great company culture and creativity/innovation. They can also lead to increased productivity, which can contribute significantly to higher profits. Interestingly too, there are studies that prove that diversity and inclusion reduce employee turnover. With all of this being said though, companies shouldn't just introduce diversity and inclusion for promotional purposes and self-gain; it should be genuine and well thought out - in the main interest of the employees.
Does your company practice diversity and inclusion? The below questions (not exhaustive) should help you answer this:
- Do employees speak up regularly and easily?
- What does the leadership team look like? (Gender, race, educational background etc.)
- What is the average age of your employees?
- When was the last time the company made an effort to make employees feel included?
- Does the company have policies in place that protect the rights of diverse employees?
- Is management held accountable when they act in a manner that does not promote inclusion or that disadvantages diverse groups?
There is no denying that Human Resource practitioners and leaders have a big part to play in making this concept a reality. However, we should never negate the huge impact/influence employees have. Sometimes we tend to wait on management to implement certain measures and processes; but there is so much that can be done from an individual level.
I'm curious though, what do you think about this topic? Let me know your thoughts below.
