Diversity or Identitarianism?
Do you believe people of the same race/population have immutable beliefs and skills.... that are then different across races/populations? If you do, then it makes sense to be in favor of diversity for diversity's sake. Just as an investment advisor might want to build an investment portfolio with different asset classes (e.g. stocks, bonds, real estate, etc.) - because those different asset classes behave differently in the same market conditions - a company could do the same thing with human beings by racial category. In this view, you don't care about the individual... only the group. All individuals are viewed as merely avatars of their group.
However, what if you believe that individuals of a given race/population are only different in superficial ways... like the color of their skin? What if you believe that not all people of the same race/population have the same experiences, preferences, or views about a given issue? What if you believe that everyone is an individual with their own unique skills, perspectives, and opinions? Well, then you would want to judge everyone as an individual. You would want to make sure you weren't discriminating against anyone because of their race, but you also would want to make sure you weren't discriminating in favor of someone because of their race... for the sake of diversity. You don't care about diversity, because caring about diversity is caring about the color of someone's skin. Instead, you care about talent... and that comes in all colors.
Something to consider.
