"Diversity is a fact! It is not new!"

Is the term 'diversity' giving you fatigue? Many people appear to be using it on LinkedIn with ease. Yet, many people, in their casual conversations talk about diversity as a buzzword that is being pushed into conversations too much. It is almost as if, diversity is a new thing that is being forced upon as a 'new normal'. BUT, is that really so? Let's explore that quickly today!

What is Normal?

The norm is what is accepted or done by the majority. One could be part of the majority because of any of the two reasons:

  1. You are more in number.
  2. You are in power due to other characteristics, such as financial status, caste, race, or other positions of privilege.

Here is a poem by a friend of Ginny's Planet: Jayshree Murali . This would connect with many of us:

No matter who sets it, somehow the 'normal' becomes a standard to which we are expected to conform. Human beings differ from one another in their appearance, sexual orientation, behavior attitudes, and belief systems. And yet, society prescribes an entire catalog of social customs, practices, and codes of behavior and morality, to which 'normal' people must adhere. (As mentioned in 'The Invisible Majority', India's Abled Disabled by C.K. Meena & V.R Ferose)

Is Diversity New?

"Diversity is not about how we differ. Diversity is about embracing one another's uniqueness." - Ola Joseph

In today's globalized world, diversity should not be a buzzword. Diversity is a fact. With the rapid growth of technology and the rise of interconnectedness, the world has become a melting pot of cultures, religions, and languages. Diversity is all around us.

What is diversity?

Diversity refers to the differences that exist among people, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, and physical ability. These differences can be visible or invisible and can shape how we see the world and how we interact with others.

Why does diversity matter?

Diversity matters for several reasons. For one, it promotes creativity and innovation. Different perspectives, experiences, and ideas can lead to more creative and innovative solutions, as well as more empathetic and inclusive decision-making. It's also about fairness and justice. When we exclude or marginalize certain groups, we deny them their basic human rights and contribute to social inequality.

In a diverse environment, people are exposed to different cultures, beliefs, and lifestyles, which can help break down stereotypes and prejudices. Ultimately, embracing diversity creates a more just and equitable society where everyone can feel valued and included.
