Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the Workplace

Northbridge works every day to promote Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) within all of our communities and at our Home Office. To learn more about everything that Northbridge does to encourage DEI we have enlisted the expertise of Northbridge VP of Human Resources, Deb Bradshaw .

What does Northbridge do to encourage DEI within their communities?

Northbridge sets the expectation of a respectful workplace for all associates by providing ongoing education and training on DEI topics, providing safe avenues for associates to voice concerns regarding DEI, supporting flexible work arrangements that accommodate the different needs of all associates, and frequently surveying associates to identify where Northbridge positively supports inclusive practices and where there is room for improvement. We believe respectful interactions are as important as the other dimension of building a positive culture - equitable leadership practices, career fulfillment, good communications, and work/life integration.? It is through these principles, we create a workplace atmosphere that prioritizes respect, breaks down obstacles, fosters open communication, and sparks innovative thinking from which we all benefit.

What is Northbridge4All and how did it get its start?

Northbridge4All is a company-sponsored council that was created to harness the Northbridge spirit of DEI for our associates as well as our residents.? Each Northbridge community has a Northbridge4ALL committee that celebrates the uniqueness of their associates and residents by organizing a variety of educational, meaningful, and fun events.

What are the goals that Northbridge has for DEI within the company?

Northbridge continuously works to create an environment that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion in all its forms. We believe this creates equal opportunities for our associates, better outcomes for our residents and the greater Northbridge community.?

What do you see for the future of Northbridge and DEI?

I see Northbridge taking the initiative in establishing a work environment that embraces diversity, prioritizes equity, and ensures inclusion is a tangible reality for everyone. When individuals perceive their worth and have confidence in their leaders and colleagues, they are more inclined to dedicate their time, skills, and allegiance to contribute to the ongoing success of their organization.

What are goals that you hope to accomplish in 2024 related to DEI?

Northbridge is?dedicated to creating an inclusive?work?environment for everyone.? In 2024 we will continue to raise organizational standards, fostering overall DEI awareness that creates a work environment where our associates feel respected, valued, and individually empowered to promote and sustain an inclusive workplace.?

What would you say is the most successful part of DEI at Northbridge today?

I often hear from my human resource colleagues at other companies that they struggle with executive leadership making DEI a priority.? I’m proud to share that Executive leadership at Northbridge is 100% committed to a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and respectful workplace. Understanding it is not just about workplace policies but setting the tone with the embodiment of shared values, clear communication and the enforcement of behavioral standards that provide our associates with a sense of belonging and safety in expressing their ideas, concerns, and aspirations.

From the very beginning of Northbridge, co-founders Jim Coughlin and Wendy Nowokunski have always believed in ‘doing well by doing good’. It’s by promoting this mindset and embracing our ‘Live Well, Love Life’ motto that we bring to life the idea that by treating others with respect, keeping an open mind and always leading with kindness we can create an environment where everyone feels they are a valued member of an inclusive community.
