Diversity, Equality and Inclusion April Blog: Age is just a number
When you meet a child for the first time you generally ask their name (so you know how to address them) and their age. Once you know their age you make assumptions about them (tall/small for their age) and about their abilities which could be way off mark.
In my spare time I coach athletics. Most running clubs organise groups by age but for me the overriding criteria is how long it takes an athlete to run their chosen distance. Age is no barrier: if they are good enough or have the potential to improve then they are eligible.
Over recent years at the Institute of Water I have had the pleasure of watching groups of Rising Stars seize opportunities often not available to employees with little experience. They show a passion to learn, to step outside their comfort zone and try something new because we believe in them, support them and have confidence they will deliver. Three of the Rising Stars have served on our Board of Directors – a model being adopted by some water companies - and they have brought new perspectives and energy to the Board as well as developing as individuals.?Don’t hesitate to offer opportunities to young/inexperienced staff: they will surprise you.

Last weekend I made two short journeys by Metro. On both occasions I was offered a seat, most likely because of my age. I had probably walked/jogged more miles that week than they had this year but I smiled and accepted graciously. I may be about to retire but I’m a former international athlete looking forward to new opportunities to learn, share that knowledge and inspire others. The same applies to the majority of the “ageing workforce” in the water sector. Don’t let their knowledge and experience slip away; instead find ways to engage them to inspire and support others - and don’t think anyone is ever too old to learn.
See people for their potential to learn, develop and share their learning: don’t let age be a defining factor.
