2022 diversity coverage analysis

2022 diversity coverage analysis

With the final edition of Ports & Harbors for this year having gone to press, it is time to look at our coverage analysis into inclusion of female voices as well as regional representation again.

Coverage of IAPH regions by edition and year

To recap, in 2020, some IAPH regions were not reflected in coverage at all in some editions

Since 2021, every edition deals with every region and we paid more attention to commission more articles that pertain to the global port situation

EMEA is still the most focused region, which increased in 2022 over the course of the year, partly due the Ukraine/Russia war

Cover interviewee balance is good with representation from North and South America, Europe, and Asia in 2021 and North and South America, and Africa in 2022

Australasia is, however, still the least mentioned region

Authors and interviewees by gender per edition

Female to male author ratio is very balanced in 2021, slightly worse in 2020 and 2022, which is sometimes only saved by the fact that I wrote more of the articles in 2022 myself

The male to female interviewee ratio needs drastic improvement:

–Around 70/30% in 2020 and 2021

–Around 75/25% in 2022

I have already advised contributors to seek more female voices in their articles.

There is a balance of the number of male and female cover interviewees 2020 and 2022, one more female in 2021 than male. In 2021, out of six editions, we had four women on the cover. This year three, and we had our first cover interviewee from Africa. So I’m quite pleased with that as it’s a vital way to show face and promote the many talented women and people we have in the industry.
