COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY in Asia: Diversifying speakers and thought leadership in sport

COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY is a global movement to diversify speakers and thought leadership in sport.

Women's perspectives must be included.

We share our perspectives at sports events, academic conferences, and in media. Our full list of 1000+ self and peer nominated women in 100 countries is the backbone of COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY.

Women self or peer nominated before Monday October 22, 2023, (JST) were added to our list. It is by no means an exhaustive list. While the day to day updates have stopped, this new series of content featuring the 1000 women by continent will keep the movement moving.

Last week we began with Africa.

Today we are presenting Asia.

Read about the making of the list here: COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY: A movement to diversify speakers and thought leadership in sport

But first, let me tell you what we're all about:

COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY: Our logo

  • Our organic movement, moving in different directions at its own will. The O in COLLECTIVE... A tennis ball? A baseball? The globe? I see it all.
  • A world of sport and we are grabbing our space.
  • The font: Unbounded, yes that's the name of the font. Bold, brave, making a statement.
  • The color? Because I like it.

COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY: The beginning

  • Started in November 2022.
  • In my experience, women speakers are still underrepresented in sports related talks.
  • I started by doing a gut check with nine women in my network and with their YES, I wrote my first post on the subject.
  • The list came to life when I tagged that immediate network

COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY: A list, not a ranking

  • Let me emphasize: COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY is a list — not a ranking — of self and peer nominated women.
  • The list grew organically from 1 to 1000+ self and peer nominated women and everyone is equally valuable.
  • I listened to feedback that I should consider making it in alphabetical order. However, I lost hyperlinks when cutting and pasting, and LinkedIn articles were not up to speed with dragging pictures.
  • I added new names continuously, from all across sports, C level and students alike.
  • I looked up sports events and summit websites for speakers and followed I am speaking tags on LinkedIn.

COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY: Our place in the world

  • At the beginning, I noted the city and/or country of residence.
  • Adding the location, not the nationality, was done intentionally to show the geographic presence of our COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY.
  • I was less interested in where we were from.
  • From a logistical perspective for event organizers, I believed it would be more beneficial for them to be aware of my location in Japan rather than my Swedish nationality.

COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY: The name

  • Early 2023, the list was given a name: COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY.
  • COLLECTIVE as in together, VISIBILITY as in we are everywhere.
  • And you'll see us everywhere.

COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY: Intent to diversify

  • After the 500 mark, names started coming in at lightning speed.
  • A couple of Calls To Action (CTA) really put a worldbound spin on the engagement.
  • Our COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY was getting cemented geographically name by name with a CTA for women in academia and a CTA for women in the Global South.

COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY: Reaching our goal

COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY: Our global presence

  • We have women representing our COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY presently in, or from, countries at war. We share their fear, grief and pain. As the founder and curator of COLLECTIVE VISIBILITY, I have made a donation to Save the Children.
  • Here's the list of countries, their flags, and the corresponding numbers of women speaking about sport in those places. Kindly notify me of any mistakes!
