Diversified’s Dual Fuel Motorcoach a Main Attraction at Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub Summit

On February 7, 2023, the?Edmonton Region Hydrogen Hub?hosted a one-day summit celebrating the region’s momentum and setting the agenda for the year to come. A Diversified coach fitted with dual fuel technology was one of the main attractions at the summit. Click the video below to check out the event.

Canada’s 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan is an ambitious and achievable roadmap that outlines the path for Canada to reach its emissions reduction target of 40% below 2005 levels by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050.??

Hydrogen availability and distribution infrastructure is very limited in Alberta and it is going to take a number of years to develop a network of hydrogen facilities.?Although a small number of hydrogen transit style buses are available, a hydrogen luxury coach is not available at this time.?

Diversified partnered with Diesel Tech Industries to develop a dual fuel coach which would be able to operate on 80% hydrogen and 20% diesel and would be capable of continuing to operate on diesel if hydrogen isn’t available.?This dual fuel capability is not only a crucial stage while the hydrogen distribution grid is developed across the province and until our manufacturers develop a hydrogen fuel cell unit.

The likely cost of a hydrogen fuel cell coach will be in the $1.5M range compared to a relatively cheap dual fuel hydrogen/diesel conversion which should cost less than $50K. Converting our coaches rather than buying new hydrogen fuel cell units (if they were available) will allow us to utilize and fully depreciate our owned assets, while working towards the 2030 emission reduction targets.

The Dual Fuel Guardian system will allow us to operate our fleet of coaches fitted with conventional diesel engines and clean-up their emissions by directly injecting a metered amount of hydrogen into each port of the diesel engine. Idling a tier 4 diesel engine is well known to be problematic.

Injecting a metered amount of hydrogen directly into each port will not only improve combustion, but will reduce the affect carbon has on the engine due to idling. Additional benefits include: reduced maintenance costs, improved fuel efficiency through improved combustion and anticipated improved Mean Distance Between Failures (MDBF)?

Diversified and Diesel Tech Industries are pioneering the way on this new technology and are excited with the progress of this project in a few months.
