Diverse Voices, One Mission: Women Advancing Science at SanaClis

Science thrives on diversity - ?ideas, experiences, and perspectives. When women are empowered in science, innovation flourishes.

Our founder is a woman, and that legacy continues to shape the culture of SanaClis. We foster an environment where women not only contribute but lead, where mentorship fuels ambition, and where diverse perspectives drive progress.

This International Women & Girls in Science Day, we celebrate the brilliant women across our global offices who are breaking barriers, leading change, and inspiring the next generation. From experienced professionals leading clinical trials to students taking their first steps in the industry, our team reflects a rich diversity of talent, passion, and expertise.

Read their stories below, which are as unique as their journeys, but they share one mission: advancing science to improve lives.

What inspired you to pursue a career in science?? What role did mentors and allies play in creating opportunities for you to advance in the science field?

Sofia Sihelská, Quality Assistant (Slovakia)

Science was never a major focus in my family, but education has always played a significant role in my life. My mother, as a teacher, nurtured my love for learning from an early age, making school an exciting place where I could constantly discover something new. I was always drawn to the logic behind science, how everything fit together and made sense, and I enjoyed discovering how things work.

One of the biggest influences on my decision to pursue science was my high school chemistry teacher, whose deep passion for the subject was truly inspiring. Through her teaching I realized how much I enjoyed understanding chemical processes and fundamental principles governing our world. Later when I discovered that pharmacy connects beauty of chemistry and biology, I knew it was a perfect fit for me. During my university studies, I always felt supported and encouraged by professors, which strengthened my passion in the scientific field.

What is the most exciting or impactful project you’ve worked on/ How do you see your work contributing to the future of science or healthcare?

Anna Olipra, ?Senior CRA (Poland)

I have worked on many exciting projects throughout my career as an Oncology Clinical Research Associate. What’s really most rewarding aspect of this work is seeing the lives changed through drug approvals after years of hard work. To give an example, I was successfully managing a Phase II clinical trial for a new targeted cancer therapy. I was responsible for patients' enrolment, ensuring their safety and well-being throughout the study and overseeing data collection. The trial resulted in strongly positive outcomes, with a significant increase in response rates compared to the standard of care. These kinds of experiences further reinforce my passion for clinical research.

Why do fewer girls and women pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers, and what’s being done to promote equality in these fields??

Judy Quick, Quality Specialist, Pharmacist (USA)

Despite STEM's growing importance, women remain underrepresented due to pervasive gender stereotypes, a lack of female role models, unwelcoming male-dominated environments, and various social, cultural, racial, and educational barriers. Limited networking opportunities and work-life balance challenges further exacerbate this issue. Initiatives like inclusive education, mentorship programs, and public awareness campaigns are underway, and organizations are working to foster more supportive environments.

SanaClis, a woman-owned organization, exemplifies this commitment through its contributions to medical research and by fostering opportunities for women in STEM. Success in STEM requires not only qualifications but also strong mentorship, resilience, grit, embracing failure, seizing opportunities, and persistent effort. I am fortunate to be part of SanaClis, working alongside a team making a tangible difference. SanaClis champions women in leadership, providing visible role models and a supportive yet challenging environment. I deeply value my inspiring female mentors here, whose expertise spans the US, Slovakia, and Ukraine.

What advice would you give to young girls considering a career in science today?

Katerina Markoska, Medical Science & Medical Writing Lead (Bulgaria)

I would sincerely encourage them to pursue a career in science. There are more opportunities in science now than ever before, not just for women but for everyone. The wonderful part about a career in science is the constant learning and discovery. You may find yourself deeply immersed in a specific area for a while, but many scientists shift their focus as their careers progress, exploring new challenges and areas of interest. Remember, science is also a collaborative field. Building networks and nurturing relationships are essential for success. So, if you're considering a career in science, know that it's not a solitary journey—you'll be part of a community of curious minds, working together. It is an engaging and exciting journey!

International Women & Girls in Science Day is a powerful reminder that science and innovation thrive when everyone has a seat at the table. Yet, despite progress, barriers still exist, and representation remains uneven.

Today, we celebrate the women who are pushing boundaries, challenging norms, and inspiring future generations. Their voices, ideas, and contributions are essential—not just today, but every day.
