Diverse Paths to Cybersecurity Success: 10 Alternate Roles That Can Launch Your Career

It can be frustrating and demoralizing when you can't land the job you were hoping for. However, that doesn't mean you need to remain unemployed or give up on your dreams of working in cybersecurity. Consider taking on a role that requires less cybersecurity experience while still keeping you in tech, providing exposure opportunities, and facilitating learning in a less direct way.

In my early career, I took a position in a call center (which I had never wanted to do) because I knew it was the best place to learn about all of the company's products and connect with people across the organization. This role eventually led me to acquire enough knowledge to transition into a trainer role for the call center, setting the stage for a successful career in learning and development. Years later, I took on my first program manager role, a lateral move that allowed me to hone my budget management and leadership skills. Little did I know that this role would lead me to manage the Information Security course, sparking my interest in cybersecurity.

Now, let's discuss how this applies to you. If you're struggling to land a Cybersecurity Specialist role as envisioned, consider exploring other positions that may not align with your ultimate goal but can pave the way and open doors for you. Here are ten roles you may want to consider:

  1. Project Coordinator/Manager for IT Projects: Working on IT projects, especially those involving security enhancements or infrastructure upgrades, can provide exposure to cybersecurity processes and considerations.
  2. IT Auditor/Internal Auditor: Conducting audits of IT systems, processes, and controls can give you insights into cybersecurity risk assessment and compliance frameworks.
  3. Business Analyst/IT Business Analyst: Analyzing business requirements, workflows, and systems can help you understand how cybersecurity aligns with business objectives and processes.
  4. Data Analyst/Data Coordinator: Handling data management tasks, data analysis, and data governance can give you a perspective on data security and privacy concerns.
  5. Compliance Analyst/Coordinator: Assisting in compliance efforts, regulatory audits, and policy development can provide exposure to cybersecurity governance and regulatory requirements.
  6. Technical Writer/Documentation Specialist: Creating technical documentation, security policies, and procedures can enhance your understanding of cybersecurity frameworks and best practices.
  7. Risk Management Coordinator: Supporting risk assessment activities, identifying and mitigating risks, and participating in risk management processes can give you a holistic view of cybersecurity risk management.
  8. Network Administrator/Engineer: Managing network infrastructure, configuring firewalls, and troubleshooting network security issues can give you hands-on experience with cybersecurity tools and protocols.
  9. Systems Administrator/Engineer: Administering and maintaining IT systems, including security configurations, patches, and updates, can deepen your understanding of cybersecurity practices within an organization.
  10. Incident Response Coordinator: Assisting in incident response planning, coordinating incident handling procedures, and conducting post-incident analysis can familiarize you with cybersecurity incident management and response strategies.

After securing a job, don't just sit back and hope for the best. Activate part 2 of your strategy: use your time within the company to build relationships, develop a plan for mastering your current role while adding skills for the desired role, take advantage of tuition assistance programs for certifications, and showcase your value to the organization. Discuss opportunities with your manager that align with your career goals and aspirations.

As you journey through your career, keep in mind that every role, no matter how unexpected, can be a stepping stone toward your desired destination. So, why not embrace the adventure and explore the diverse opportunities that come your way? Who knows, your next move could be the one that propels you into the cybersecurity universe you've been dreaming of!
