Diverse experiences help the world fly

Diverse experiences help the world fly

This is a story that I was not comfortable talking about for a long time. You will know why in a minute. I was born and raised in Egypt. My father left when I was two, and my mother raised me. In Egypt, being a single mother was rare and carried societal judgment. However, my mother was very supportive of me and prioritized excellence in education, which provided a backbone to thrive and succeed. But I felt I needed to hide the fact that I was raised by a single mom. It was uncomfortable, even painful at times, unproductive most of the time, and wasted some of my energy all of the time. Then, I moved to the United States to attend Cornell University.

Arriving in the United States and finding an amazing mix of students from different nationalities and socioeconomic backgrounds, I never felt like I didn’t belong at Cornell. I was surrounded by diversity and supported in an environment where I could excel. I loved it. I thought this was the environment I always wanted. Then, I moved to work at GE, and I was fortunate to find people who supported me and an environment that unlocked my potential and that of many others. I never thought that someone with my name and background could achieve my current position. That by itself is a testament to our inclusive culture. I am forever indebted to my mom, this country, GE, and the many people who believed I might have some potential even though I have a different name and skin color. By the way, I get some instant goodwill and a laugh sharing a name with a famous boxer!

Earlier this year, in an interview with Cornell University Engineering magazine, I shared my beliefs about the importance of diversity. Research tells us that people who come to work as their best selves have more confidence to voice breakthrough ideas. Likewise, businesses and organizations thrive when people focus energy on the work — instead of wasting time and energy pretending to be something they’re not.

I’m fortunate to have found a vocation I’m passionate about and a career at a company that welcomes diverse perspectives and fosters an inclusive culture. Our rich aviation legacy includes a long line of pioneers, problem-solvers and risk-takers. GE Aviation understands that to attract and retain a new generation of explorers, innovators and architects of the future of flight, we must create an environment of belonging where everyone feels welcomed, heard and able to bring their best selves to work. To truly create an inclusive culture requires every member to share the same values: respect, inclusion, integrity, trust and transparency. We must listen to one another and seek different perspectives and opportunities to collaborate. Of course, we all have different views but that is beautiful in itself.

What else can we do to recognize World Day for Cultural Diversity? Think about any biases you?might have about people who are different than you. Be curious about other traditions, practices and religious beliefs. Seek input and collaboration across teams, levels and backgrounds. Finally, make it fun: try new foods, watch a movie or read a book about another culture.

With GE Aviation engineering employees located across Asia, Australia, Europe and South and North America, I see the diversity and potential the world has to offer in our organization. So, this year on?World Day for Cultural Diversity, I’ll celebrate the unique backgrounds, experiences and perspectives that deliver innovative, industry-leading products that keep the world flying.?

Beautifully written, Mohamed. I was fortunate to cross your path 12 years ago, and the impact from that crossing is something I feel in my career and personal life until these days. I wished we had had more time working together, but even from a distance it has been great seeing your growth and you impacting the life a lot of other people. I eventually also had to chance to come live in the US, and you are right, the diversity and how it is welcome here are amazing. I met people from such different cultures and backgrounds, and they just helped my life become more meaningful.
