Where Childhood Dreams and Sustainable Design Meet
Imagine a child’s whimsical drawing brought to life in the most enchanting way possible. That’s precisely what happened when a 5-year-old girl’s sketch inspired the Nest Installation in Tallinn. This luminous bird’s nest, perched high on a former light mast, is not only a beacon of creativity but also a testament to sustainable design.
The story began with a simple sketch—a bird’s nest envisioned by a young girl. Velvet , in collaboration with UN-LIK and other creative minds, saw the potential to transform this innocent drawing into a vibrant public art piece. They utilised materials sourced from construction sites, turning discarded items into something magical and meaningful?.
Nestled at Noblessner Port, a historic area once home to a major submarine shipyard, the installation serves as a luminous landmark visible from both land and sea. LED-powered “eggs” light up the nest, ensuring it shines brightly day and night. The branches, shaped from recycled materials, add a touch of organic beauty, making the nest appear as if it grew naturally atop the mast? .
This installation is more than just a visual delight; it embodies the principles of sustainability and community engagement. By repurposing existing resources, Velvet demonstrates their commitment to eco-friendly practices and innovative design solutions. The Nest not only beautifies the urban landscape but also sparks conversations about the importance of sustainability in art and architecture.
The Nest Installation is a shining example of how imagination, when paired with sustainable practices, can create something truly extraordinary. It invites the community to look up and marvel at what can be achieved when creativity and environmental consciousness come together.
