Employee engagement is often conflated with job satisfaction - if the team is happy, they’re engaged! As leaders in the workplace, you know that this is not enough. It’s possible for an employee to have high job satisfaction and be?indifferent to the company’s success. We imagine we’re all swimming in the same pool, but rather than diving in enthusiastically, they remain in the shallow end of the pool.
In a virtual workplace, it’s difficult to maintain and strengthen the connection and commitment your employees have with your organization. ?Rather than accepting a shallow level of engagement - the employee who lives for 5:00 pm ?- how do you keep your team invested in the work? How do you get them to engage deeply with your company?
Here’s how.
????Define it: What does employee engagement mean to you? Many companies have clearly defined ?what they mean by “employee engagement”. Do you have a similar statement? Each of the following statements points to a core truth - engagement is about connection and commitment.
◆????Quantum Workplace - Employee engagement is the strength of the mental and emotional connection employees feel toward their places of work.
◆????Gallup - Engaged employees are those who are involved in, enthusiastic about, and committed to their work and workplace.
◆????Willis Towers Watson – Engagement is employees' willingness and ability to contribute to company success.
????Recognize engaged employees: Engaged employees go above and beyond which is essential for the long-term growth and profitability of your company. They know their value, and their contributions feel significant.
How do you recognize an engaged employee? Look for these behaviors:
◆????Optimistic
◆????Team-oriented
◆????Solution-oriented
◆????Demonstrates a passion for learning
◆????Passes along credit but accepts blame
????Recognize signs of disengagement: Can you spot the employees who have checked out? Team members who have grown resentful can drag down the workplace culture. Look for the signs below so you can ?re-educate and invite these employees into a better understanding of your organization:
◆????Pessimistic

◆????Self-centered
◆????Absentee
◆????Focuses on monetary worth
◆????Accepts credit but passes along blame
????Cast a vision: Having a comprehensive view of the organization can help drive employee engagement. Employees want to see that their leaders are committed to making the company a great place to work, and trust their leaders to set the right course. Do your employees believe in the success of your organization? Do they see themselves as key players in the future?
?
????Positive Leadership: Employee engagement is deepened when employees and managers have trusting and respectful relationships. Studies show [CT2] ?that employees leave managers, not companies. Ensure that your employees have positive relationships with their direct supervisors.. Do your employees have the authority and equipment to do their job well? Do they have the freedom and trust to make critical decisions?
?
????Communicate effectively: You have a lot of “engageable moment” opportunities where you can motivate and direct employees, either formally (recruitment, onboarding, performance reviews, or training) or informally (coaching, mentoring, social events, or career development). Are your communication strategies engaging your employees in the core values of their work, as well as the day-to-day?
?
You can unleash extraordinary potential in your organization when you help your employees engage deeply with your company.
