?? Welcome back! Happy Dreaming + Doing Sunday?
ICYMI: Celebrate the Dreaming on Purpose book launch with me at Cafe con Libros on Thursday, August 20th! Join me for a candid discussion about what’s at stake for us as Black women in the workplace and centering our dreams as the antidote to oppression.
Now, on to today’s sermon....
My early lessons about income were straightforward: the money you make from your job goes to pay bills, and if there was anything left, we'd head to the mall. Old lotto tickets spread across the kitchen table served as a reminder that unless we had a dollar and a dream, there was no way we'd be millionaires. I didn't think about generational wealth the way other groups do. It seemed like something other people did until I challenged that notion and educated myself about the various opportunities to grow my money.?
That’s why I loved my conversation with Karen Mitchell of True Indian Hair. Karen is a Jamaican-born, Brooklynite who took a chance on her dreams and opened her business after she was laid off.?
In this throwback interview, Going Beyond the Paycheck -- How Black Women Can Build Generational Wealth, we have an honest conversation about we have an honest conversation about the topic of building generational wealth and why it is imperative for us. She takes us through the ups and downs from day one of starting her company to how she built a 7-figure business. I go deeper into Karen’s story in my book because I was so impressed with her commitment to her community and how fiercely dedicated she is to her mission. She is as down-to-earth as they come.?
Karen shares how we can set ourselves up not just to get by financially but to really create financial wealth as black women in business through home ownership and investments. Despite having bankruptcy on her record, Karen did what others would tell you not to do in order to make her dream work.?
After this conversation, I know that financial prosperity starts with an inner mindset of wealth. If you don’t believe you deserve to have more, you will almost always settle for what you get. There is more out there for you, Sis. Wealth is your birthright.?

7 个月Ariane, I love this! It is definitely important for black women to know, understand, and believe that wealth; significant wealth is attainable! I am currently in the midst of connecting to my next best role as a career professional, and what I understand now about my value and the results that I’m able to produce, I will not allow myself to be ‘short changed’! When I look back over my career, I see clearly how mangled my mindset was about earning money. I was definitely in that ‘take what you can get’ phase for quite some time. And because I worked in a nonprofit for so long, I had a ‘give your brilliance away for free’ mentality with my business as well. I believed that my services needed to be ‘reasonable’, ‘affordable’. Thank goodness for growth and awareness!
