Ditch the ‘Belonging’ Act—It’s Time to Build Your Own Empire - Build a Plan for Your Future

Ditch the ‘Belonging’ Act—It’s Time to Build Your Own Empire - Build a Plan for Your Future

Today, I want to talk about making a plan for your future. Yes, you might think you’re already planning, but there’s a difference between having a career plan and owning your vision. If you’re working for someone else, even when you treat your job like it’s your own business, there’s always a risk that the rug can be pulled out from under you. How? Companies change. They "upscale," scale down, merge, restructure. Suddenly, you’re a stranger in the place you’ve called home for years.

You might have spent a decade building the functions of a department, strategizing, coming up with ideas that are now essential to the company’s operations. But guess what? Those ideas, that department, don’t really belong to you. And maybe, neither do you—at least not fully.

To truly belong, you have to belong to yourself. You can lend your talents to others. You can offer your skills and expertise to an employer, but when you see it for what it is—temporary, like a client relationship—it changes everything. You gain clarity and power when you start thinking of employment as just one chapter, not the whole story.

The only way to feel deeply grounded in your work is to pour your passion into your own life, your niche, and your craft. You have the power to turn your ideas into action. Build them, shape them, and create something that’s truly yours. Not so you can close the door and retreat inside, but so you can build a structure that’s open—a temple, where you offer solutions to the world.

Six Action Steps to Start Owning Your Future

  1. Stop Seeing Your Job as Your Identity Your job is what you do, not who you are. Take time to reflect on what makes you feel alive and fulfilled outside of work. What projects, skills, or ideas make you light up? Start identifying the difference between your work and your deeper passions.
  2. Map Out Your Vision Write down where you want to be in the next three years, not just in your job but in your personal and professional life as a whole. What would success look like if you were working solely for yourself? This will help you anchor to your own goals and not just your employer’s.
  3. Turn Your Ideas into Tangible Projects It’s easy to have big ideas, but turning them into something real? That’s the challenge. Take one idea you’ve been sitting on and create an actionable plan. Break it down into steps you can start today. Don’t wait for permission—start building it now.
  4. Network as if You’re a Business Owner Even if you’re employed, start thinking of yourself as your own brand. Build connections and relationships that align with your long-term vision. You never know who could be your future client or collaborator.
  5. Build a Safety Net If you’re relying on a paycheck to support your lifestyle, think about how you can start building multiple streams of income. Can you freelance, teach, or offer services on the side? Diversify where your income comes from, so you’re not entirely dependent on one source.
  6. Create a Personal Brand that Represents You Your personal brand is the story you tell the world about who you are. What do you want people to associate with you when they hear your name? Whether it's through social media, a blog, or networking events, start positioning yourself as an expert in your niche.

I love that you want to ditch the belonging act. I’ve noticed that it’s the new Buzz word and people all of a sudden come out of the woodwork dubbing themselves as masters of “belonging.“ Cristina Segatto
