DISTRIBUTED SENSING FLASHING BEACON

Various studies have indicated that the continuously flash-ing beacons do not necessarily attract driver’s attention because they are always on and drivers are used to them. In addition, they flash 24/7, day and night, even when there are no vehicles on the streets, which could introduce the visual noises to the residents living nearby. For some applications, it is better to have flashing beacons activated only by approaching vehicles.

Migma Systems has developed an alternative product, Dis-tributed Sensing Flashing Beacon (DSFB). The sensor receiver is embedded inside the housing of flasher, draw-ing power from solar panel or solar battery. Using solar-powered vehicle detection sensor, it flashes only when vehicles are detected within certain distance (up to 1500 ft) to the flasher. Otherwise, it is off! If preferred, it can also be configured to flash continuously. It is economical, solar-powered, and can be installed in few hours.

Some vehicle drivers can be easily distracted by devices such as smart phones while driving. These distractions, caused by their devices, are well documented, rising cause of pedestrian and/or vehicle accidents and sometimes fatal-ities. More and more people are getting involved in pedestrian / vehicle accidents, a good portion of these can be avoided. But there’s new evidence today that even walking across the street is getting more and more dangerous.

The Governors Highway Safety Association shows that the number of pedestrians killed in traffic jumped 11% last year, to nearly 6000. That’s the biggest single year increase in pedestrian fatalities ever, and the highest number in more than two decades.

One contributing factor, as witnessed every day, just by observing both the pedestrians and the drivers, travelling thru your parking lot, one thing they have in common, their eyes are down, staring at their phones or are engaged in a animated conversation on their phone. This is most prevalent at entrance & exit cross walks. This is especially common with our young people.

These distractions, caused by their devices, are well documented, rising cause of pedestrian- vehicle accidents and sometimes this leads to fatalities. Too many pedestrians are becoming oblivious to the traffic around them.

With the development of RRFB Devices, the driver is alerted to stop signs, crosswalks and intersections. Unfortunately, the Federal Highway Administratioin has terminated interim approval for these devices on December 21, 2017.

The Federal Highway Administration has an analysis of the Effects of Stutter Flash LED Beacons increasing yielding to pedestrians using unsignalized intersections, summarizing the results of the studies, “When going from a no beacon arrangement to a beacon system, on the supplementary warning sign on the right side of the crossing, increased yielding from 18% to 81%. There was further increase in yielding behavior, with placement of beacons on both the right and left side of the crossing to 88%. It was evaluated for 1 year and found there was little to no decrease in yielding behavior over time.
