DISTRACTIONS

DISTRACTIONS

Distractions. They're everywhere these days, from social media notifications to never-ending to-do lists. They have a sneaky way of pulling us away from what really matters.

When we let distractions take over, we risk losing sight of our goals and wasting valuable time on less important things. One of the biggest dangers of distractions is that they often lead us to worry about the wrong things. Worrying drains our mental energy and leaves us feeling stressed and overwhelmed. It's important to remember that worrying doesn't solve problems or bring us closer to our goals; it just keeps us stuck in a negative cycle.

So, how can we combat these distractions and stay focused on our priorities? Firstly, we can start by identifying what truly matters to us and setting clear goals. This way, we have a roadmap to guide our actions and help us stay on track.

Next, it's important to create an environment that's conducive to focused work. This might mean turning off notifications on our devices, finding a quiet space to work, or using time management techniques like the Pomodoro Technique.

The Pomodoro Technique involves breaking tasks into manageable chunks and working on them for 25 minutes at a time, followed by a 5-minute break. After completing four of these cycles, take a longer break of 20-30 minutes. This technique helps improve concentration, productivity, and reduces mental fatigue and stress.

Lastly, we need to practice self-discipline and hold ourselves accountable. It's easy to get sidetracked by distractions, but by staying committed to our priorities and reminding ourselves of their importance, we can overcome their pull.

Distractions can be tempting, but they can also hinder our progress. One thing I've noticed is that we often distract ourselves from facing the truth about where we stand. By keeping busy and filling our schedules, we avoid looking in the mirror and figuring out what we need to do to grow. Sometimes, it's important to approach our leaders and ask for feedback on our performance.

I recently had a proud moment with my son, Jack. Despite being easily distracted, he's incredibly focused when it comes to improving in soccer, his passion. After soccer practice, while the other boys were goofing off and packing up, Jack had a serious conversation with his coach. They talked for about 10 minutes, long after the others had left. When I asked him what they were discussing, he said, "I asked him about my weaknesses." He's just 13 years old! I didn't tell him to do that, none of the other boys did it. Jack cares, and he was able to push aside distractions to ask the tough questions, the ones most of us avoid. And because of that, he'll become better.

By being aware of the dangers of distractions and taking proactive steps to minimize their impact, we can stay focused on what truly matters and achieve our goals.

Great article and BIG problem to be solved. I recently deleted Facebook from my phone for this reason. I started to notice that I wasn’t really learning or absorbing anything. You do the infinite scroll, set your phone down, and completely forget everything you just saw. What’s the point? So I deleted it. More “social” media apps to follow. Except for LinkedIn, obviously. ??
