Distractions

Distractions

TLDR

Teachable Moment:?Ignore the distraction of other's opinions and maintain your focus.

The Problem

Everyone has an opinion.

Especially when it comes to the work you do.

You’re subject to various?opinions?from all corners of the organization.

Stakeholders, fellow managers, employees from other teams - everyone holds a unique perspective on your work and leadership.

The feedback and comments will also vary - from encouraging words of appreciation to stinging critiques or even unwarranted judgments.

These views, especially the negative ones, can quickly?overshadow?your focus and create a distracting environment.

And falling into the trap of such distractions is all too easy.

You’ll find the urge to defend your work, seek validation, or even wrestle with why some fail to recognize your value.

The Solution

Maintain your focus and trust in your judgment.

While it’s encouraged to engage amicably with others, it’s essential that you do not allow yourself to become entangled in a web of unsolicited opinions.

Not every thought or viewpoint deserves your?attention, and it’s crucial that you avoid being swayed or lose focus due to the noise of others’ perceptions.

Approach opinions carefully, selecting what is beneficial and discarding what is irrelevant or unhelpful.

Welcome constructive?criticism?as an opportunity for growth and improvement, allowing it to steer you toward performing better in your role.

But when it comes to unfounded judgments or disparaging remarks, build your resilience to deflect them.

Always remember, your value as a manager is determined not by what others think of you but by your actions, accomplishments, and the value you bring to the organization.

Keep learning,

Josh

Couldn't agree more! It's so easy to focus and dwell on comments of peers and supervisors, wondering if you should have handled or said something differently. But if never addressed, these thoughts only keep you from living in the moment and focusing on the task in front of you.
