Async could change your day?
I sure hope it does! Because too many of us are lurching from meeting to meeting, being interrupted by ‘quick chats’ that last longer than the promised two minutes and we could well be over-collaborating.?
It’s becoming tricky to find the quiet time we might need to work on meaningful work and make good progress on those bigger, deeper projects.?
This article from?BBC ?shares some of the pros and cons about how synchronous work like meetings are taking too much time and energy … and more asynchronous work could be just what our day needs.?
It’s such an important topic and a shift that is possible for so many industries, roles and businesses to make in these times.?
Take a read.
AND keep an eye out for my latest book ‘Sync Async: Making progress easier in the changing world of work’ which is due out in a few weeks.?

How to grow your ideas?
It’s challenging to be put on the spot in a meeting or workshop, particularly when there’s an expectation you’ll just magically come up with brilliant ideas.?
Growing great thoughts and ideas can take time.?
So what can you do to help yourself — and others — grow more ideas?
Work asynchronously.?
That is, not everyone in the same meeting at the same time in real time. It gives people more opportunities, time and space to think.?
Plus, if you give yourself a night’s sleep in that time, you’ll come up with even better ideas, and more of them!?
Our brain loves to do a bit of sorting and synthesis overnight as well as filing, processing, mixing and taking out the trash.?
If there’s a meeting or workshop you’ve got coming up and it’s about generating ideas, put your brain to work on the task sooner.?
You don’t need hours of actual thinking time but it’s elapsed time that can help.?It will give you more chances to :
?? connect different things,?
?? keep a look out for existing ideas to combine into new ideas,?
?? find themes, topics and subjects to join together, and?
?? be exposed to more sources of inspiration.?
You don’t have to be in a meeting to come up with an idea.?
Asynchronous work is increasing in popularity in the workplace. A key reason is that it gives our creative brains time to plant ideas and harvest even better ones.?
How to do it??
?? observe, think and make notes about your thoughts BEFORE the meeting?
?? add to those notes about your thoughts DURING the meeting
?? keep adding to your notes AFTER the meeting.?
Each of these situations has the potential to help you grow plenty of ideas.?
Start planting sooner.?
The distraction in defaults
Responding to notifications from messages, emails, mentions and comments on our apps and devices can take up a big portion of our day.??

If we react every time something ‘dings’ or flashes on our screen, we end up being interrupted constantly.?
And this impacts our cognitive load coping abilities — how well we manage thinking and processing information.?
But many distractions occur simply because we haven’t changed the default settings that come with apps, software or programs we’re using.?
Defaults - as this?WIRED?article by?Justin Pot?shows - can be more in the interests of the software makers, than the software users… us.
So go carefully.?
Check the default settings and notifications that are enabled.?
Rather than responding, jumping or reacting — and taking a while to get your concentration back, to get in flow — be the boss of what grabs your attention.?
The interruptions and distractions could be something preventing you from getting a clear run at some quiet time.
