Disruptive Innovation: Buzzword or Word of the Day?

Disruptive Innovation in Healthcare

Disruptive Innovation in Healthcare

In healthcare, I believe that we need to be mindful of using significant terms as mere buzzwords that begin to lack substance or motivate actual change. Harvard Professor Christensen in 1995 offered “Disruptive Innovation” as a practical business theory or model that has the potential for many applications in healthcare to change systems to improve the health of the patients that we serve. “Entrants [in a market] that prove disruptive begin by successfully targeting those overlooked segments, gaining a foothold by delivering more-suitable functionality—frequently at a lower price.” In other words, Disruptive Innovation is creating value in a targeted way to deliver higher quality care at a lower cost – now that is a buzzword I can live with!

Do you see the practical applications of Disruptive Innovation for the healthcare industry - or do you think it has just become overused business jargon?
