Disrupting Patient Experience - Make a Ruckus That Makes a Difference
The power of voices and collective efforts is unparalleled in creating the change we urgently need to see in healthcare. ?By uniting together, patients, healthcare providers, administrators, and society as a whole can amplify their impact, challenge the status quo, and drive transformative reforms that prioritize patient-centered care, improve provider wellness, and address the systemic issues plaguing the healthcare system. ?Only through collaboration and shared responsibility can we usher in a new era of healthcare that truly meets the needs and aspirations of all stakeholders.
I feel honored to learn of and meet so many each week who are working individually and collectively to positively contribute to healthcare change.?It uplifts my motivation, increases my efforts, and strengthens my belief that – together – we can make a difference.?We can create the transformation we mutually desire for the betterment of patients, providers, all healthcare employees, and our society at large.
It will take each of us – together.
This is the eleventh edition of Let's Make a Ruckus.?This bi-weekly newsletter aims to provide you with knowledge, resources, and connections of value that support your work in healthcare.?We will celebrate ruckus makers, introduce you to those doing work that makes a difference, and keep you informed of upcoming opportunities where you can let your voice be heard and make a ruckus.
Celebrating a Ruckus Maker
Todd R. Otten, MD, FAAFP is a Board-certified family physician, an honored Naval Flight Surgeon, and a former Chief of Staff and ACO Medical Director. ?He is now an author and advocate for healthcare change.?Todd recently co-wrote and published Ripple of Change with Joshua Judy.
?About the book:?The combined journey of Todd – doctor – and Joshua – patient – offers a compelling narrative of trust, healing, and a vision for a transformed healthcare system that prioritizes patient experience, quality care, lower costs, and provider wellness. This book serves as a powerful catalyst for change, inspiring readers to actively participate in reshaping the future of healthcare and creating a ripple effect of positive transformation.
Throughout the book, Todd and Joshua challenge us to change how we refer to the Quadruple Aim.?This is OUR Quadruple Aim.
I was priviledged to be on a call this week hosted by Gabe Charbonneau, MD with Medicine Forward to learn more about Todd and the book and share an exceptional conversation.
During the conversation, Todd shared his experiences and insights on transforming healthcare delivery to prioritize patient care and provider well-being. He emphasized the importance of advocating for what's right, even if it means saying no and challenging the status quo. Todd and the group also discussed
- The need for empowered healthcare professionals who are willing to initiate change and build a supportive team.
- The significance of finding like-minded individuals and creating a unified front to drive meaningful change.
- And emphasize that change in healthcare requires a collective effort and a commitment to improving patient-centered care and provider well-being.
The recording to that conversation is below. ?I hope you might join the further conversations that are sure to be had.?

One of the lessons shared from Nightingale is the role of everyone in healthcare to create the exceptional healthcare results we desire. Tom Dahlborg shared this post with a similar message. Doug Pohl 's question emphasizes that we each have an opportunity every day to contribute.
Dr Helen Curr asks the following in the article she shared:
Health care innovation has a worrying tendency to look like a cookie cutter version of something that went before it. We pilot, we pilot again, we pilot with a very moderate tweak. What is on offer can be highly prescriptive, mapped out in advance, no matter who or what issue enters the room. What if innovation could include the genuinely radical – and more, what if the innovation was by its very nature flexible, responsive, and bespoke in each and every interaction with a patient.
