The Argentine government has announced significant changes to its customs operations, including the elimination of the Argentine Customs (AFIP) and the creation of a new entity that will result in the reduction of approximately 35% of the positions within AFIP. This move has sparked unrest among customs officials, prompting them to organize strikes and protests at the Pass Los Libertadores.
The planned strikes took place on October 28th and 29th, during which truck passage was halted. On October 30th, all customs operations ceased, leading to complete restrictions on truck movement. These actions are expected to create ongoing congestion at the border and delays in shipments. Updates on the situation will be provided as they develop.
Additionally, due to adverse weather conditions, the vessel MATTHEW SCHULTE, which departed from San Antonio on October 27, had to perform a cut & run and could not complete its loading operations. Consequently, all cargo originally designated for MATTHEW SCHULTE has been transferred to the vessel CAPE HELLAS.
CAPE HELLAS is scheduled to depart on November 2 and will carry the rolled bookings from MATTHEW SCHULTE. The shipping line will confirm whether they can accommodate the original bookings; otherwise, those may be rolled to the vessel MARTINIQUE, which is set to depart on November 8. Efforts are being made to manage the backlog at the port, with the success of these plans depending on developments during week 44. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
We will continue to monitor the situation and provided further updates accordingly. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us or email us for information at: [email protected]
