DisruptED in the D: Matt Cullen's vision for Detroit beyond Bankruptcy to Booming Again

When you ask any of Detroit's leaders who is most responsible for the city's unbelievable recovery over the past 20 years from bankruptcy to boom, two names always and immediately surface: Dan Gilbert and Matthew Cullen

Ashley M. Williams and I had a chance to talk with Matt on DisruptED in the D. In speaking with a number of people who have followed the Riverfront reclamation along with Detroit's other big building projects, everyone says the same thing. This amount of development would not have happened without Matt.

Several reasons:

  • In order to oversee a massive redevelopment, creating a public-private partnership, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy , insured that the work would continue despite any setbacks or challenges
  • So many with diverging interests had to be brought together, requiring years of negotiating and relationship building. Matt's ability to bring people together is simply unrivaled.
  • It helps that Matt puts his money where his heart is-- He personally contributed $5Million to seed the project.

  • Matt's passion for the City of Detroit knows no limits. He had the vision to see that Detroit could be a world class city with a thriving downtown, and a Riverfront that was accessible to all.

There is more to follow. Hear from Matt on what a thriving Detroit looks like. Join us and get DisruptED with us!

How exciting and encouraging! I lived and worked in SE Michigan for twenty years, then Northern California for 20 years and returned to Michigan just a short time ago. It is thrilling to see the growth and energy and enthusiasm and optimism around the great city of Detroit. Keep it up and count me in!

I couldn’t agree more, Ron!! Matt Cullen is not only an extraordinary leader but an overall great guy as well — it’s an absolute pleasure to work with him on the DRFC! Our great city is sooooooo lucky to have his leadership and commitment to achieving the best imaginable river walk in the nation — and even worldwide!!! It’s “Bridge to Bridge!!” — and we’re gonna’ DO IT!’ ?????????? Pvnb??
