Dispelling Remote Work Myths

Dispelling Remote Work Myths

With a small-sized team, we truly felt the loss of Nicole when she went on leave in late 2019. It wasn't the same without her --Slack channels felt quieter, Canva seemed less colorful, and we saw way fewer cute pup pics in our #15000 Pets channel... However, we couldn't have been happier for her. She took the time she needed to grow her family.

We're Not too Small for Core Values

As a small team, we spend a lot of time developing our value system as a company. Creating our values has been a team effort. We understand that defining our values system helps us work better together. It improves the quality of our work and elevates the energy and environment we work in (whether virtual or not).

Our values are reflected in our day-to-day interactions, client decisions, management, hiring, even content & social media decisions. We even use a really cool tool called Standup Alice to recognize each other daily when we show up in a positive way with a value.

The 15000 Cubits Core Values:

  • A Growth Mindset
  • A Celebration Culture
  • Deep Relationships
  • Commitment to Excellence

As a remote team, we have to be much more intentional to ingrain this values system into our work. Celebrating victories and each other becomes more difficult when you aren't able to grab balloons on the way to the office and hang them on your co-worker's desk. Yet, it's still possible.

So, with that being said, in this article, we aim to celebrate Nicole! And our awesome team.

We get a TON done every day, yet also start our days with giphy battles every day, and connect with each other on a personal level that builds true relationships.

Not just true relationships.

#Deeprelationships

As a distributed team, we fight common myths associated with remote agencies. And the fight is fun! We get creative about things like Team Thanksgiving Dinners (thank you UberEats!) And frequently check the mail and find "just-because care packages" for each other.

Remote Work Myths that Simply Aren't True at 15000 Cubits

  • MYTH. Relationships with your co-workers don't exist in a fully remote company
  • MYTH. It's hard to stay connected as a team and know what everyone else is up to
  • MYTH. Remote work is all work, no fun, and very little team-building
  • MYTH. Remote workers don't work as hard as they would in an office
  • MYTH. Remote work is only for people that aren't quite as social
  • FACT. Remote work rocks when you work hard and celebrate each other and the work you do together

And to celebrate Nicole's return, a few of our team members wanted to share their thoughts with her here.
