Recently CoolESG founder Michael Yiin (Me) and my co-founder Dr. Shana Yong went to Africa for a business trip on the sponsorship of our client. It was an 18-hour flight with multiple layovers which can be tiring and exhausting.
Not surprisingly, we expressed initial apprehension that Ethiopian Airlines was the choice of airline provided by my clients as we also did our research into the airlines during our trip preparation which created a lot of initial hesitations about the comfort and even safety of our trip as there was multiple negative reviews on Tripadvisors and other travel review platforms. However, it comes to my realization that some airlines especially Ethiopian Airlines often face misconceptions, with some labeling it as one of the worst airlines. However, my recent experiences compel me to challenge these myths and provide a more accurate reflection. Here are some of the things we take note of and tips on how to improvise to enhance the experience of your flights.
**1. Punctuality and Efficiency: For our first round trip, Ethiopian Airlines surprised me with its punctuality. Flights depart and arrive on time, showcasing a commitment to efficient operations. The airline's adherence to schedules contributes to a positive travel experience though one could deduce that it is also because flying around Africa involves multiple layovers which means that punctuality is not just a matter of professionalism but also a matter of business ethics since it ensures that the passengers can reach their destination on time. This is shown when our time of arrival for our return trip is even earlier than the designated time of arrival.
**2. Customer Service: The airline's staff, from check-in to onboard service, is attentive and courteous. They demonstrate professionalism and go the extra mile to assist passengers. In situations where disruptions occur, the customer service team handles issues promptly and effectively. Although the complaints from the airline customer services are valid to some extent as little assistance is provided there are ways to mitigate it.
1) the air stewardess tends to provide additional drinks or services when they happen to pass by your seats either during meal time or on their walk around the cabin. Request for these additional foods and drinks during those opportune time
2) Do ask for such requests politely rather than demand it as a form of entitlement. Do know that like all air cabin crews in any airline, they undergo a high level of stress, and being courteous go the extra mile in encouraging good services. If you can, write a good letter of commendation for staff that have exceeded service excellence.

Other than the flaws mentioned, Passengers can expect a comfortable journey with updated amenities such as dental kits and sleeping kits.
**3. In-Flight Experience: The in-flight experience surpasses expectations. Comfortable seating, entertainment options, and quality meals make the journey enjoyable. Unlike most airlines that offer only 2 options for every meal, Ethiopian Airlines is one of the few I have seen that offer 3 options; usually in the form of beef, chicken, or fish options. However, it is not without its flaws. Seats and walkways are narrow and tight, making sitting, sleeping, and walking around rather uncomfortable and claustrophobic(making it not suited for wheelchair-bound passengers. And not all seats are well-maintained hence do expect some malfunctions of your television and seats or even some rubbish in your seats.
**4. Global Connectivity: Ethiopian Airlines serves as a key player in connecting Africa with the world. Its extensive route network ensures global connectivity, facilitating seamless travel for passengers traveling to or from Africa. Most local airlines are interconnected, making transits and layovers convenient and stress-free
**5. Safety Records: Despite some fatalities in the past, Ethiopian Airlines has maintained high safety standards, with an excellent safety record. The airline prioritizes safety protocols and invests in training its crew to handle various situations effectively.
While no airline is flawless, Ethiopian Airlines dispels the myth of being the worst. While its service is not exceptional for the price that is being paid, it is easy to say that we got more value for what was paid for. My positive encounters with their services highlight their constant improvement to excellence, dispelling the misconceptions that may overshadow their achievements in the aviation industry.

4 个月Flying the airlines the second time, I commend Ethiopian Airlines especially as an African Airline for great and reliable services. However, some improvements must be done. For instance, I flew a 13 hours or so flight from Toronto to Addis with no working entertainment and later found out that I wasn’t alone in that dilemma. All efforts by the staff to rectify the problem failed and the defective systems wouldn’t have suddenly happened at the same time. Another concern was the standard of the aircraft that flew from Addis to Lagos, it was unbelievable, it was rickety. Such aircraft will not be allowed to fly from Europe or North America. I guess that is a different subject matter.
Although I never flew with them I also heard positive things about Ethiopian Airlines from different sources... thanks Michael Yiin
