DISPATCH RIDERS TRAINING PROGRAM FOR YOUR ORGANISATION
The Dispatch Rider Training Program is an established, proven program. It is designed for the adult learner. Complete concepts are presented so they are easily understood. Materials are fully integrated. This enables participants who can't read well to learn visually and through group discussion.
Dispatch riding is essentially riding in a manner that utilizes safe riding strategies to enable cyclist to address identified hazards in a predictable manner. These strategies go well beyond instruction on basic traffic laws and procedures.
With dispatch riding classes, students learn to improve their dispatch riding skills by reducing their riding risks by anticipating situations and making safe well-informed decisions. Such decisions are implemented based on road and environmental conditions present when completing a safe riding manoeuvre.
Dispatch riders, sometimes known as couriers, transport items quickly by motorcycle. Items can include packages, letters, legal documents or messages.
Typically, a depot controller will be in radio contact with the dispatch rider/courier giving details of where and when to collect the package, and the destination address. Dispatch riders sign for the package on collection, and get an appropriate person to sign for it upon delivery.
Most of the trips will be short journeys in a built-up area of a major city. Occasionally there may be longer journeys. Riders rarely return to base. They will normally be in contact with the depot controller by two-way radio, pager, mobile phone or roadside telephone.
Dispatch riders/couriers are responsible for keeping their motorcycle roadworthy and to ensure they deliver their package safely.
Dispatch riders/couriers work in all weathers. They also have to cope with exhaust fumes and noise from other vehicles. Safety clothing such as a helmet, leathers, gloves and boots are always worn.
Benefits of Dispatch riding:
The benefits of taking a dispatch riding class vary.
Just as the benefits of dispatch riding classes vary with each location, so do the requirements. While most basic dispatch riding classes are four hours long, some can be as long as six or eight hours.
What’s Included in a Basic dispatch riding Course
The contents of a dispatch riding course are:
1.Traffic Crashes
Losses from traffic crashes have both social and personal impacts. Approximately 41,000 die annually as a result of traffic collisions, with an additional 3,236,000 injuries. About 38% of all fatal car crashes are alcohol related with another 30% attributed to speeding.
The causes of these crashes, emotional impact and cost in naira spent on bike crashes are typically covered in dispatch riding courses. The goal of good dispatch riding is to reduce the risk of these accidents by properly educating students to exercise caution and good judgment while riding.
2.Psychological Factors
On the roadways, cyclists have to deal with several factors that can affect their riding. Though some of them are beyond the control of the rider, psychological factors can be controlled by the rider if he knows what to look for and how to handle it.
Dispatch riding courses tend to focus on how riders can overcome negative psychological factors such as unneeded stress, fatigue, emotional distress and road rage. They also offer instructions for developing a positive attitude behind the bike and increasing your focus on the riding task.
3.Human Factors – RUI
Riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol continues to impact thousands of Nigerian riders each year. While the specific effect of each drug on your body takes place in differing stages, the effect of cyclists operating a bike while under the influence is disastrous.
A very common component of all dispatch riding courses is education about the role that drugs and alcohol play on Nigerian's roadways. Topics tend to include the state’s limits as to blood-alcohol level, how your judgment, inhibitions, motorcycle skills and senses are affected by drugs and alcohol and the consequences of being found guilty of riding under the influence.
4.The Dynamics of a Crash
Bike crashes are almost always a preventable result of a series of events. The combination of speed, place of impact and size of object being impacted can determine the severity of the crash. In every accident, however, the act of one bike hitting another bike, vehicle or other object is not the only collision that can occur.
The concept of the second collision, in which the rider collides with objects within the bike range when not wearing a helmet, leathers, gloves and boots can be just as dangerous as the initial collision.
Dispatch riding courses address the issue of bike crashes and second collisions by listing the elements of a crash and illustrating how the forces of impact can be avoided or limited.
5.Safety Equipment
Approximately half of all deaths that are result of a bike crash could have been avoided if the victim were wearing a safety equipment properly. Items such as helmet, leathers, gloves, pads and boots all serve to protect riders and reduce the risk of injury or death in the event of a crash.
Dispatch riding courses offer tips on how to use these devices properly and ensure your safety when traveling the roadways.
6.Crash Prevention Techniques
The key to any good dispatch riding strategy is knowing how to avoid traffic crashes and recognize potential hazards before it’s too late. That’s why despatch riding courses tend to present a lot of information on crash prevention techniques.
In a typical dispatch riding course, students learn crucial crash prevention techniques that include:
Scanning the roadway and adapting to surroundings
Employing the two-second rule for following distances
Knowing your bike’s stopping distance
Being aware of reaction distance
Environment hazards
Bike emergencies
Sharing the road
Passing and necessary clear distance
Right of way
Speed adjustments and speed-bump crossings
State Traffic Laws
The final portion of many dispatch riding curriculum requirements is specific traffic laws. While for many students this portion serves as a mere refresher course, traffic laws are not always known by all students.
And especially in places were dispatch riding courses are taken as a result of receiving a ticket or other traffic violation, relearning these traffic laws can help turn a traffic offender into a good dispatch rider.
