Disney's Cutest Robot Introduced Briefly

Disney's Cutest Robot Introduced Briefly

How will we see robots in 10 or 20 years? Adversarial invaders, useful tools or loving companions? I guess it depends where you look today.

Hey Everyone,

In an era of fanciful Generative A.I., large language models and robotics, even Disney is living up to its reputation.

Did Wall-E just Come to Life?

A Disney Research team introduced its new bipedal robot that looks like Wall-E and can strut, dance, gaze directly, and follow people as if it had its own mind.

Last week at the 2023 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) in Detroit, a team of researchers from Disney Research Studios in Zurich revealed a charismatic, child-sized bipedal bot that looks like a cross between a cleaned-up WALL-E and well, perhaps a baby chick?

If it’s supposed to conjure up a cute adorable feel, it worked, Disney got it down right. At least first impressions would incline us to believe this.

Are Robots the Future of Pets?

Disney is getting very good at combining the art of character animation with the science of bipedal robotics, and the results give us a Jetson vibe of a future era where robots might be raised to be like pets.

You know what it reminds me of? AIBO the series of robotic dogs designed and manufactured by Sony. Wall-E is not quite as cute, but still - it’s Disney after all.

Programming robots to move in emotive ways is something that Disney is an expert in, going as far back as 1971, with its animatronic Hall of Presidents in Disney World. More than 50 years later as robots become more prominent perhaps in the decade ahead, it will be interesting to see how Disney utilizes them. Disney’s stock DIS 0.00%↑ is down in recent times.

The robot is mostly 3D printed and was developed by a team from Disney Research in Zurich in less than a year, led by research scientist Moritz B?cher.

The team said that roboticists worked alongside animators to ensure the robot could move expressively without falling over, just like a real animated character.

While technology can enhance pet care, it can’t replace the love, companionship, and emotional connection that our four-legged friends provide. Robots may be fascinating, but they will never replace the wagging tail and purring warmth of a real pet.
